FLYING ACROSS EUROPE AND BEYOND: A CONVERSATION WITH THEO WILDEBOER
Few pilots combine passion and experience like Theo Wildeboer. Based in northern Netherlands, Teo has been flying since 1998 and has explored Europe from the North Cape to Morocco and Greece. With a background that began on small Cessnas and Pipers, he has now embraced the Tecnam P2010 Gran Lusso for its efficiency, reliability, and versatility. In this interview, Teo shares his journey, his thoughts on the Tecnam community, and why flying remains both a personal adventure and a way to give back.
Q: What led you to switch from your Piper to a diesel Tecnam, and why did you choose the Gran Lusso specifically?
T.W.: Around 2020, I considered selling my Piper and exploring diesel options. After studying several planes, I narrowed it down to a Piper Warrior diesel and the Tecnam, and in 2021 I purchased the Gran Lusso. Initially, I even thought about quitting flying, but a conversation with Dick Hollman convinced me to continue. I chose the Gran Lusso because of its improvements: better engine cooling for adverse weather conditions, enhanced systems, and a refined FMS and, of course, its luxurious leather interior. These upgrades solved some challenges I’d faced flying diesel planes in dutch winters, and now I’m very happy. I plan to keep flying it for several more years.
Q: Talking about practical matters. How is diesel availability across different airfields?
T.W.: Diesel is widely available, which is a big advantage. Plus, the Tecnam is very fuel-efficient, around 26 liters per hour. Compare that to my Piper Arrow, which consumed 45 liters per hour at home, and the difference is significant.
Q: What do you enjoy about Tecnam community events?
T.W.: They’re fantastic for meeting fellow pilots, exchanging experiences, and learning. I particularly enjoy connecting with those who dream of long-distance trips. I hope to organize a world tour with a few Tecnam pilots someday. Flying across Europe with this community has been incredibly rewarding.
Q: Do you usually fly solo or with passengers?
T.W.: Mostly solo, but sometimes with other pilots or clients. I also fly for a foundation supporting children with severe illnesses, which is very meaningful to me.
Q: And your overall impression of the Gran Lusso?
T.W.: I love it. Diesel is efficient and widely available, and the plane is a joy to fly. It offers performance, reliability, and the freedom to explore. That’s what keeps me in the air.
