France Receives First NH90 Caïman Standard 2 Helicopter for Special Forces

France has delivered the first production NH90 Caïman Standard 2 helicopter to the French Army’s 4th Special Forces Helicopter Regiment (4e RHFS) in Pau, launching a major modernization of its special operations aviation fleet. The delivery strengthens France’s special operations capabilities while enabling the redistribution of H225M Caracal helicopters to the French Air and Space Force for combat search and rescue and other high-priority missions.
The first production NH90 Caïman Standard 2 enters operational service with the 4e RHFS as part of France’s long planned Special Forces helicopter renewal program. Its fly-by-wire flight control system and integrated ice protection system continue to distinguish the platform by reducing pilot workload and enabling operations in adverse weather conditions. The helicopter accommodates two pilots and up to twenty fully equipped troops, carries a useful payload of approximately 4,110 kg and can lift external loads of up to 4,000 kg using its cargo hook system.
Compared with the NH90 Standard 1 operated by conventional French Army Aviation units, the Standard 2 introduces an extensive package of mission enhancements. It incorporates the Safran EUROFLIR 410D electro-optical turret, combining high-definition day and infrared imaging with four laser functions, including a laser designator capable of supporting precision-guided munitions. It also receives a new digital map generator together with the Eurofl’eye distributed panoramic vision system, which combines a multispectral Distributed Aperture System with mission electro-optical sensors and projects the imagery directly onto the TopOwl binocular helmet-mounted display. This architecture improves pilot situational awareness during low-level flight, degraded visual conditions, and night operations while allowing mission imagery to be shared in real time with crew members and commandos through digital displays. Rear sliding windows have been enlarged to accommodate MAG58 machine guns for enhanced self-protection, while the cabin has been modified to accommodate a third crew member during complex missions.
