France rushes A400M into firefighting role over Gironde wildfire

France has committed an Airbus A400M Atlas fitted with an experimental retardant drop kit to the wildfire burning in the Gironde department, bringing the aircraft into operational use several days ahead of the timeline set out by the government earlier in the week.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu asked the armed forces to deploy the aircraft from July 25, 2026, his office announced, with the first drops expected during the afternoon. The fire, which began on July 22, 2026, north of the Arcachon basin, had burned roughly 30,000 hectares by July 25 according to local authorities, prompting evacuations across several communes as the front pushed toward the Bordeaux conurbation.

The French Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Armed Forces had signed an agreement with Airbus on July 17, 2026, to make available and equip an A400M with a drop kit on an experimental basis.

Qualification of French Air and Space Force crews began on July 20, 2026, and the ministries said at the time that a first commitment in the field could follow within about ten days. That window was compressed to five, with a second trial drop conducted near Air Base 123 Orléans-Bricy on July 24, 2026.

Twenty tons, laid ahead of the flames

The roll-on/roll-off kit requires no structural modification to the aircraft and allows it to release 20 tons of retardant in a single pass. The two ministries described that as the equivalent of two drops by a Dash 8-Q400MR, the largest type in the French civil security fleet, and said the A400M would work ahead of a fire to lay retardant lines protecting vulnerable areas rather than attacking the flames directly.

The aircraft cannot scoop, unlike the Canadair CL-415, and must land to refill its tank. Airbus first demonstrated the kit in Spain in July 2022, releasing 20 tons of water in under 10 seconds, and returned to France for accuracy trials at Nîmes with the Directorate General for Civil Security and Crisis Management in April 2025.

Spain announced on May 21, 2026, that it would fit part of its own A400M fleet with the same equipment.

A capability with no combat record

The French Air and Space Force operates more than 25 A400Ms from Orléans-Bricy, and the type has never dropped retardant on an active fire. Evaluation work has run since 2024 between the service’s Military Air Expertise Center, Airbus Defence and Space and the civil security directorate.

The government has consistently framed the aircraft as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, the 12 Canadairs, eight Dash 8s and 12 water-bombing helicopters already fielded. French lawmakers examining the option in 2025 cautioned that the A400M remains a military asset whose civil security use should stay occasional.
