Mirage 2000D was on final approach when it crashed
Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Nancy-Ochey Air Base, confirmed during a press briefing on October 21, 2026, that the Mirage 2000D was on final approach to the base following a routine night training mission when air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft.

French military confirms deaths of both Mirage 2000D crew members
The French Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed on October 22, 2026, that both crew members aboard the Mirage 2000D that crashed near Nancy had been killed.
The deceased were identified as Lieutenant Colonel Antranig Sarkissian, 44, the aircraft’s weapons systems officer (NOSA), and Lieutenant Quentin Klysz, 27, its pilot.
Sarkissian had been stationed at Saint-Dizier Air Base since 2022. An experienced navigator with 2,200 flight hours and 55 combat missions, he had deployed on operations in Afghanistan, Mali, Niger, Sudan and Chad.
Klysz had been assigned to Fighter Squadron 3/3 “Ardennes” at Nancy-Ochey since August 2025. He was training with Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” aboard the Mirage 2000D as part of his operational combat pilot qualification. He had accumulated 450 flight hours.
The ministry said radio and radar contact with the aircraft was lost during the night training mission, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation. Aviation safety and judicial investigations remain underway to determine the cause of the crash.

On June 16, 2026, France’s Directorate General for Armament (DGA) delivered the 50th and final Mirage 2000D upgraded under the aircraft’s mid-life renovation program, intended to extend its operational service beyond 2030.
Previous fatal fighter jet accidents in the region
On January 9, 2019, a Mirage 2000D from Fighter Squadron 1/3 “Navarre”, also based at Nancy-Ochey, crashed near Mignovillard in the Jura mountains, killing its pilot and navigator.
The subsequent BEA-É investigation identified spatial disorientation as the most likely cause and highlighted insufficient training linked to heavy operational commitments and limited aircraft availability.
More recently, on August 14, 2024, two Rafale fighters from Saint-Dizier collided during an air combat training exercise near Colombey-les-Belles in Meurthe-et-Moselle, killing two aircrew members.
In its investigation report published on June 10, 2026, France’s State Aviation Safety Investigation Bureau (BEA-É) found that simultaneous, opposing control inputs from the instructor and trainee aboard one aircraft temporarily prevented a coordinated evasive maneuver. The post French Air Force confirms two killed in Mirage 2000D crash near Nancy appeared first on AeroTime.
