Frontier Airlines expands network with 20 new routes in Spirit Airlines markets
Frontier Airlines is growing its network by adding new domestic and international routes that link major hubs in the top 20 metropolitan areas across the United States, many of which overlap with key Spirit Airlines markets.
The airline announced the new services in a statement on August 26, 2025, with operations set to begin in late 2025 through early 2026.
Some of Frontier’s new routes include flights to Detroit Metro (DTW), Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Baltimore/Washington (BWI), Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood (FLL), Charlotte Douglas (CLT), and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), with most operating three times a week starting in late November 2025.
“We see a clear path to being the number one low-fare carrier in the top 20 US metros,” said Barry Biffle, the CEO of Frontier Airlines. “As industry capacity adjusts, we want to ensure consumers in those markets continue to have affordable flight options.”
Frontier targets Spirit markets
Many of Frontier’s new routes are based in major Spirit Airlines markets, with several operating from Frontier’s Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) base in Florida.
According to a CNBC report, Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Linenberg stated that Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines share 35% of their capacity, which is more than any other airline.
Spirit Airlines has rejected multiple merger proposals from Frontier Airlines since 2022. The struggling airline rejected the latest merger offer from Frontier Group in February 2025, stating that it would be less beneficial to shareholders compared to the airline’s current restructuring plan.
Despite Spirit’s ongoing restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings, Frontier has continued to pursue a merger, claiming that it would create a stronger low-cost carrier.
The strategy comes as Spirit struggles financially following its exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025. However, the airline has been furloughing pilots and selling aircraft in the months since, scaling back operations and taking other steps to cut costs.
In its latest report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 11, 2025, the airline warned that without building up the necessary cash reserves to keep operating, the airline could run out of cash “within the next 12 months” and may not be able to continue operating “as a going concern.”
