Gonzaga basketball team jet narrowly avoids collision with Delta flight at LAX
A private jet carrying the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team nearly collided with another aircraft that was taking off at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
On December 27, 2024, at around 16:30 local time, air traffic controllers instructed the chartered Embraer E135 jet, operated by Key Lime Air, to stop before crossing runway 24L at LAX, because Delta flight 471 was taking off from that runway at the time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Air traffic controllers stopped the Embraer E135 as it was about to cross the runway. The aircraft did not go past the runway edge line.
At the time of the incident, the basketball team had just arrived at LAX from Spokane, Washington. There were no injuries reported.
Video footage shared on X by Airline Videos captured the incident and includes audio of an air traffic controller telling the Key Lime Air flight to “stop, stop, stop” as the plane was preparing to cross the runway.
“STOP STOP STOP!” LAX ATC urgently called out to a Key Lime Air jet as a Delta jet took off from runway 24L. Was this a runway incursion? A Delta spokesperson said that flight 471 operated as normal, and the carrier was “not aware of any communication from the FAA regarding this flight”.
