Harbour Air seaplane collides with boat in Vancouver, injuring two: video
Two people were hospitalized after a Harbour Air De Haviland DHC-2 Beaver seaplane collided with a pleasure craft in Coal Harbour, Vancouver, British Columbia.
The aircraft departed the harbor’s seaplane terminal and was about to take off for a panoramic flight with five passengers and a pilot onboard at around 1pm local time on June 9, 2024, when, for reasons that are currently unknown, it hit the boat on its path.
The two injured people were reportedly passengers on the boat. 10 other people, including all those aboard the seaplane, were evacuated from the scene uninjured.
Canadian authorities are now investigating the incident, which was caught on video by bystanders and posted to social media.
Vancouver-based Harbour Air is one of the largest seaplane operators in the world, with a fleet of 40 aircraft. It operates charter, tourist, and scheduled services, mostly along the British Columbia coastline and its many islands and inlets. It also operates a regular seaplane service linking downtown Vancouver to Seattle, Washington.
In the last few years, Harbour Air has also gained some notoriety because of its pioneering role in electric aviation. Since 2019 Harbour Air has been testing DHC-2 Beaver seaplanes retrofitted to be entirely powered by electric batteries. In June 2022, the airline completed the world’s first all-electric commercial air service, between Vancouver and Vancouver Island, 72 km away.
