Heathrow Airport: boost in trans-Atlantic flights contributes to record January
London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) saw record levels of passengers using the aviation hub during January 2025, with an 8% boost in trans-Atlantic flights helping to secure the new milestone.
On February 11, 2025, Heathrow Airport said that last month was its busiest January on record with over 6.3 million passengers travelling through the airport – 5% more than in January 2024.
Heathrow Airport described trans-Atlantic travel as a “key contributor” of the rise with more than 1.2 million passengers flying between the UK and US – up 8% compared with 2024.
January 2025 also marked the eleventh month in a row in which Heathrow averaged over 200,000 passengers a day.
The latest update from the UK’s largest airport also commented on recent news that the British government had approved a new runway at Heathrow.
It said it “welcomed” the government’s recent show of support, adding that to “successfully deliver this project at pace will require policy changes, including on airspace modernization, planning policy reform and changes to the regulatory regime”.
“2025 has started how we mean to go on – serving record breaking passenger numbers and delivering trade and investment across the whole of the UK. To ensure we continue on this upwards trajectory, the Government has signalled their support for an expanded Heathrow. We’ll now work with Ministers to progress the necessary policy changes required to advance our growth plans,” said Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye.
Heathrow Airport will finalize its plans over the coming months and will submit a proposal to the government by the summer 2025.
