From 2021 to the Present Day

In July 2022 the first advanced training course (phase IV) set up in the context of the International Flight Training School (IFTS), itself stemming from a 2018 agreement between the Italian Air Force and the Leonardo company for Italian and foreign pilots destined to 4^th and 5^th generation tactical aircraft, at the Decimomannu (CA) air base under the umbrella of the 212 IFTS unit Group of the 61^st Flight Group based at Lecce Galatina.

The picturesque Pincio Terrace in Rome provided the backdrop for the formal celebrations marking the centenary of the Italian Air Force which officially became a separate and independent armed force on 28 March 1923. The ceremony, characterised by great symbolic and institutional importance, took place in the presence of the President of the Republic. Throughout the year the Armed Force organised a series of events under the heading of “THE CENTENARY“.

In January 2024, using the Ax-3 mission of Axiom Space, the Air Force took the Italy National System and Col. Walter Villadei accompanied by a totally European crew made up of 3 other persons to the International Space Station, staying the for 21 days. This event followed in the footsteps of the first suborbital flight by the Air Force carried out again by Villadei in 2023 aboard the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo shuttle.
