Horizon Aircraft and ZeroAvia to add hydrogen option to Cavorite X7 eVTOL
Hydrogen aviation startup ZeroAvia has signed an agreement with Canadian advanced air mobility developer Horizon Aircraft to build a hydrogen-electric version of the Cavorite X7 eVTOL.
Through this partnership, both companies will explore the possibility of fitting ZeroAvia’s ZA600 hydrogen fuel cell powertrain to this new aircraft, which is currently under development.
Unlike other eVTOL developers, Horizon Aircraft always envisaged a hybrid propulsion architecture for the Cavorite X7 eVTOL, combining batteries with a conventional gas-powered engine. This propulsive solution allows Horizon Aircraft to pitch the Cavorite X7 as a longer range and more performing alternative to other eVTOLs.
Horizon Aircraft promises a range of 500 miles (800km) and a cruising speed of up to 250 knots (450 km/h) for the Cavorite X7. This seven-seater eVTOL uses 14 electrically powered lift fans on its wings for vertical takeoff and landing, and a rear-mounted conventional propeller for horizontal cruise flight.
By potentially adding a hybrid hydrogen-electric option, Horizon Aircraft is following in the footsteps of Joby Aviation, which has been working on its own hydrogen-electric zero-emission eVTOL since it acquired German hydrogen propulsion firm H2FLY in 2021.
The Canadian firm has successfully tested a large-scale model of the Cavorite X7 in untethered flights. In May 2025, it also completed a full transition from vertical to horizontal flight.
