Iconic Junkers Ju 52 to move to Lufthansa Conference Visitor Center in Frankfurt
Lufthansa’s iconic Junkers Ju 52 aircraft has bid farewell to Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport (PAD), where it has been stationed since 2020.
In the coming weeks, the historic aircraft, affectionately known as “Aunt Ju,” will be transferred to the newly-built Lufthansa Group Conference and Visitor Center in Frankfurt.
While it was at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport, the aircraft was given a proper restoration by the Quax Association, also known as Quax Verein, a group of aviation enthusiasts who have a passion for restoring, maintaining, and displaying aircraft from different eras of aviation history, primarily from the World War Two period and post-war civilian aircraft.
The aircraft, D-AQUI, remains the property of the Deutsche Lufthansa Berlin Stiftung (DLBS) and will be on display in Frankfurt from 2026, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lufthansa.
“With our Ju 52, we are preserving the history of Lufthansa and aviation. The historic aircraft will enrich the exhibition in our new visitor center as an essential exhibit and will be accessible to customers, employees, aviation enthusiasts, and the general public,” said Wolfgang von Richthofen, Project Manager of the Lufthansa Group Conference and Visitor Center.
The Junkers Ju 52 is a transport aircraft that was designed and manufactured by German aviation company Junkers. It was first introduced in 1930 as a civilian airliner, and it was later adapted into a military transport aircraft by Germany’s Nazi regime during World War Two

It accounted for around 50 percent of the fleet and was valued for its reliability and economy. Originally designed as a single-engine aircraft, it was later developed into a three-engine model that was characterized by its robust construction and ease of maintenance.
While thousands were built, only a handful are still operational and in flying condition. D-AQUI, which sports Lufthansa’s 1936 historical livery, was purchased by the airline in 1984 to mark its 60th anniversary.
