Kazakhstan plans to launch a new cargo airline. Here’s what we know so far
The government of Kazakhstan is preparing to launch a national cargo-only airline, according to local media reports.
The project, which has been publicly endorsed by president Tokayev of Kazakhstan, will count on the financial backing of Samruk-Kazyna, Kazakhstan’s national wealth fund. The new carrier is expected to start operating at some point in early 2026.
This new Kazakh freighter airline will initially operate a fleet of three aircraft, all obtained from leasing companies, with the possibility of additional aircraft joining the fleet at later stages. The business plan calls for a total fleet of 10 aircraft in the longer term.
Kazakhstan’s geographical location, roughly half-way between Europe, the Middle East and China, means that around 15% of freight moving by air globally crosses its airspace. By creating its own national carrier, the Central Asian nation aims to capture part of this market and boost the country’s role as an intercontinental logistics hub.
These aspirations are also in line with the Kazakh authorities’ strategy to continue developing its national aviation sector. Kazakhstan has managed to consolidate its role as the largest market in Central Asia, which is one of the fastest growing regions in the world in terms of commercial aviation.
In the last few years, some 20 airports throughout Kazakhstan have seen significant investments and renovation, and Kazakh airlines have also been expanding their fleets. The country’s growing popularity as a tourist destination has also attracted scores of foreign airlines, namely from the Middle East and India.
According to local media, another US$2.9 billion has been pledged for investment in further developing Kazakhstan’s air transport infrastructure, including the construction of three greenfield airports, Katon-Karagay, Zaisan and Kenderli, and the complete restoration and entry into service of a fourth one, Arkalyk.
Kazakhstan’s is not the only country taking a top-down approach to the development of a national air cargo industry. In August 2024, it was reported that authorities in Saudi Arabia were also considering the launch of a dedicated cargo airline to underpin the country’s aspirations in this sector.
