KLM’s dwindling de-icing fluid supply adds to Schiphol Airport’s winter woes
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport’s (AMS) winter woes show no signs of receding with airlines continuing to cancel hundreds of flights each day due to challenging weather conditions.
On January 6, 2026, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines confirmed that due to persistent snowfall, combined with strong winds, the carrier had to been forced to cancel 600 flights on January 7, 2025.
To make matters worse KLM admitted that de-icing fluid supplies were running low due to the constant daily use since January 2, 2026.
The carrier said that its supplier, based in Germany, was currently unable to guarantee timely replenishments after 85,000 liters of de-icing fluid had been recently used per day to clear aircraft.
With KLM responsible for de-icing most aircraft at Schiphol, the carrier visited its supplier to retrieve more stock and confirmed at 21:00 on January 6, 2026, that a fresh batch of fluid was on its way back to Amsterdam.

“As a precaution, more than 600 flights are cancelled. More cancellations are expected,” said am airport spokesperson.
Flight monitoring website flightradar24, which has been keeping a tally of disruptions, said 676 had been cancelled at Schiphol Airport today.
Including a further 57 already cancelled on January 8, 2026, according to flightradar24 across seven days of disruptions 3,308 flights have been unable to begin their journeys.
Schiphol has also been given the unenviable title of today’s number one most disrupted airport by flightradar24.
