Lockheed Martin unveiled PAC-3 Edge on October 9, 2026, a next-generation Patriot interceptor designed to give the U.S. Army greater reach, altitude and maneuverability against advanced ballistic, maneuvering and hypersonic threats. Building on the combat-proven PAC-3 MSE, the new interceptor combines higher velocity and increased power with technologies aimed at expanding the Patriot system’s defensive envelope, with testing expected from 2027 and rapid deployment targeted for 2031 as the Army prepares for increasingly complex missile attacks.

The U.S. Army is preparing its air and missile defenses for a battlespace increasingly shaped by maneuvering missiles, hypersonic weapons and increasingly sophisticated attack profiles. Lockheed Martin raised the technological bar on October 9, 2026, unveiling PAC-3 Edge, its next-generation interceptor for the Army’s competitive Future Interceptor program. According to Lockheed Martin’s official announcement, the weapon builds on the combat-proven PAC-3 MSE while introducing new technologies intended to reach farther, operate higher and confront some of the most advanced threats expected to challenge U.S. and allied defenses.
PAC-3 Edge represents much more than another evolutionary addition to the Patriot missile family. Lockheed Martin is positioning the interceptor as the next major step beyond the highly capable PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement, combining greater maneuverability, power and velocity with increased performance at range and altitude. The Army has already selected Lockheed Martin to progress into the next stage of the Future Interceptor competition, with development continuing toward testing beginning in 2027 and preparations for rapid deployment by 2031. For the Army’s future Patriot interceptor requirement, the objective is clear: extend the defensive envelope against more demanding air, missile and hypersonic targets while retaining the technological foundation of one of America’s most successful interceptor families.

At the heart of PAC-3 Edge is a new Lockheed Martin-built seeker developed through the company’s Strigo Product Center, backed by a $250 million company investment in advanced seeker technology. Lockheed Martin says the new sensor is designed to increase precision and maneuverability against evolving threats. That capability becomes especially significant when confronting high-speed or maneuvering weapons, where the interceptor must rapidly refine its understanding of the target and maintain the accuracy needed during the terminal phase of an engagement. Lockheed Martin’s investment in the seeker also highlights the company’s ability to bring advanced sensing technology directly into the next generation of U.S. missile defense rather than relying solely on incremental improvements to existing hardware.
PAC-3 Edge also attacks the future interception problem from the propulsion and flight-control side. The interceptor incorporates a multi-pulse solid rocket motor designed by Northrop Grumman, providing precision thrust throughout flight, while Lockheed Martin has introduced control-system upgrades aimed at increasing performance at greater ranges and altitudes. Viewed together, the new seeker, propulsion system and upgraded controls form a tightly connected architecture: the seeker helps the interceptor find and precisely pursue the target, the motor supplies the energy needed to reach demanding engagement zones, and the control system provides the maneuver authority required to complete the intercept. This combination is particularly relevant against hypersonic and advanced missile threats, where speed, changing trajectories and compressed engagement timelines can place extraordinary demands on defensive systems.
The result is an interceptor intended to give the Army a broader engagement envelope than the current PAC-3 generation, with Lockheed Martin specifically identifying higher-altitude and longer-range engagements as key characteristics of PAC-3 Edge. Greater reach is not simply a question of distance. In a layered defense architecture, the ability to engage threats farther away and at higher altitude can potentially increase geographic coverage and create additional defensive opportunities before an incoming weapon reaches the assets it is targeting. Lockheed Martin’s approach points toward an interceptor designed for the hardest end of the threat spectrum, strengthening the United States’ ability to protect military formations, strategic infrastructure and critical assets against increasingly capable missile systems.
Another major feature of PAC-3 Edge is its planned role inside the Army’s increasingly networked Integrated Air and Missile Defense architecture. Lockheed Martin says the interceptor is designed for integration with the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), M903 launcher, containerized launchers and HIMARS Flex. That integration strategy gives PAC-3 Edge significance beyond the traditional concept of a Patriot interceptor tied to a single launcher architecture. It points toward a future in which sensors, command-and-control networks and distributed launch platforms can work together to position advanced interceptors where commanders need them most. The inclusion of containerized launchers and HIMARS Flex also indicates that Lockheed Martin is designing PAC-3 Edge with future deployment flexibility in mind, potentially giving the Army more options for dispersing and employing high-end missile-defense capability across contested theaters.
The development schedule adds another strategic dimension. Beginning testing in 2027 while preparing for rapid deployment by 2031 reflects the urgency surrounding next-generation air and missile defense as potential adversaries continue developing faster, more maneuverable and more complex weapons. Lockheed Martin enters that challenge with the considerable advantage of PAC-3’s combat-proven heritage and decades of experience in Integrated Air and Missile Defense. PAC-3 Edge seeks to preserve that foundation while pushing the interceptor into a new performance class, an approach that can reduce technological risk while allowing the U.S. Army to pursue substantial increases in capability. Lockheed Martin’s advancement into the next development phase also reinforces the company’s position as one of the central industrial players shaping the future of American missile defense.
PAC-3 Edge gives the United States a highly ambitious path toward the Army’s future Patriot interceptor: combine the proven PAC-3 MSE foundation with a new seeker, multi-pulse propulsion, enhanced flight controls, greater intended range and altitude performance, and integration across an expanding network of Army launch and battle-management systems. Its design is aimed directly at the increasingly difficult challenge posed by advanced and hypersonic missile threats. If Lockheed Martin demonstrates those capabilities through the coming test program, PAC-3 Edge could become a powerful new layer in America’s air and missile defense architecture and another example of how U.S. defense industry innovation is being directed toward preserving technological superiority against the most sophisticated threats of the future.
