Lufthansa City Airlines receives its first factory-fresh Airbus A320neo
On April 8, 2025, German carrier Lufthansa City Airlines took delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo at the Airbus final assembly plant at Hamburg-Finkenwerder Airport (XFW). The aircraft, registration D-AIJP, has been named “Ingelheim am Rhein” and joins four Airbus A319s and three A320neos within the carrier’s fleet, all previously operated by parent airline Lufthansa
Munich-based Lufthansa City Airlines commenced operations in June 2024 with the brief of operating short and medium-haul flights within Europe. With its initial fleet of six aircraft drawn from the Lufthansa mainline fleet, Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet will be expanded further with the arrival of at least eight more A320neo and more A319s over the next twelve months.
This first new A320neo is part of an order placed by the Lufthansa Group for the narrowbody jets. However, in December 2023, Lufthansa also placed an order with Airbus for 40 A220-300, with a further 20 purchase options, all earmarked for Lufthansa City Airlines for deliveries due to start at the end of 2026.
AirbusAccording to an airline statement, “This first brand-new Airbus symbolizes the key role that Lufthansa City Airlines plays within the Lufthansa Group in redefining continental traffic to and from Munich and, from 2026, Frankfurt hubs. The airline is thus making an important contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of the short-haul network, consolidating the market position of the Lufthansa Group, and supporting the planned growth on long-haul routes.”
“Our new aircraft is a further motivation and incentive for the commitment and excellent work of all our employees, who contribute to the success and growth of our airline every day,” said Peter Albers, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, after the official handover.
From May 2025 onwards, the newest addition to the Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet will offer space for 180 passengers in a single-class configuration. Like all Lufthansa City Airlines aircraft, the new Airbus A320neo is equipped with the new Airspace cabin and offers passengers significantly larger overhead bins, a modern lighting system, and improved seating.

The airline will be adding seven new destinations to its route network for the summer flight schedule 2025, including Barcelona, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville, and Bordeaux.
The Lufthansa City Airlines network now comprises 17 destinations and 18 routes across eight European countries.
