Millennium arrival: American Airlines receives its 1,000th mainline aircraft
As the company closes in on its centenary celebrations in 2026, American Airlines has marked a milestone in its history by receiving the carrier’s 1,000th aircraft into its mainline fleet. The company’s latest airplane, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, arrived at the airline’s Dallas-Fort Worth mega hub on August 29, 2025, featuring the carrier’s all-new ‘Flagship Suite’ first class product for the first time.
Since April 2025, American has received eight premium-configured Boeing 787-9 aircraft out of a total of 30 on order. The airline is currently operating the aircraft type on routes between Chicago (ORD) and London-Heathrow (LHR), Chicago to Los Angeles (LAX), and Philadelphia (PHL) to Heathrow.
“We are excited to grow our fleet, adding even more aircraft that offer customers a premium travel experience,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “Looking forward to our next 100 years, we are focused on elevating and reimagining the onboard cabin experience along with every aspect of the customer travel journey.”
American Airlines With the addition of more premium Boeing 787-9s to its fleet, American plans to expand its Flagship Suite product on more flights to London-Heathrow Airport in 2026. American will also continue to offer the newly designed Boeing 787-9 in 2026 on flights to LHR from Philadelphia (PHL) and will additionally introduce service from Dallas-Fort Worth in November 2026.
The Flagship Suite product provides “customers with a private, premium travel experience, featuring privacy doors, wireless charging pads and a cozy, one-of-a-kind chaise lounge seating option,” said an airline statement.
“Customers flying in American’s premium Flagship Suite cabin can relax comfortably with duvets, slippers, and a dual-sided pillow with cool-touch fabric while refreshing themselves with luxury skin and beauty products in American’s thoughtfully designed amenity kits. In-flight Flagship Suite service offers a multicourse chef-inspired meal paired with award-winning wines and delectable snacks sure to fulfill those mid-flight munchies,” added the statement.

In the coming months, American will offer customers the premium travel experience of the Boeing 787-9 on other selected flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Auckland, New Zealand (AKL), Brisbane, Australia (BNE), and Buenos Aires, Argentina (EZE), along with service between Philadelphia and Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH).
With the arrival of the 1,000th mainline jet into its fleet, the American Airlines 787 fleet is now made up of 37 Boeing 787-8s, each of which seats 234 passengers in a four-class layout and two variants of the larger 787-9. The airline’s standard 787-9s accommodate 285 passengers across four cabins, while the new premium 787-9s seat 244 passengers across five cabins – Flagship Suite Preferred (first class), Flagship Suite (business class), premium economy, economy plus, and economy.

Despite the latest addition to the fleet, American Airlines is not stopping there. It has another 408 aircraft on order, which includes those earmarked for operation by American Eagle, its regional affiliate. The new upcoming arrivals due to arrive in the fleet in the coming years include 151 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, 141 Boeing 737 MAX family, 28 more Boeing 787s, and 90 Embraer E175 regional jets.
