Noumea-La Tontouta Airport closed to flights amid New Caledonia riots
Nouméa-La Tontouta Airport (NOU) announced the cancellation of commercial flights as the city of Nouméa, in the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia, grapples with political tensions and violent riots.
“Nouméa-La Tontouta airport is experiencing a major disruption with the cancellation of commercial flights and the closure of its doors,” the New Caledonia Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “This unforeseen situation has caused disruption for many travelers.”
Airport authorities have advised affected passengers to stay updated by contacting their respective airlines directly.
At the time of writing, the only flight still operating at the airport was an oncoming flight of the French government, CTM1017, operated by the French Air Force Airbus A330 registered F-UJCT.
The recent unrest in Nouméa comes amid intense discussions during a parliamentary session concerning a constitutional reform being contested by supporters of New Caledonian independence.
