NZDF deploys P8-A Poseidon, Hercules C-130 after major earthquake hits Vanuatu

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has deployed one of its P8-A Poseidon and Hercules C-130 to Vanuatu after a major 7.3 magnitude earthquake had struck the island nation.

The Hercules C-130 was the first to depart on the evening of December 17, 2024, the day the earthquake hit Vanuatu. However, the aircraft, which carried Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) personnel, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) staff, and equipment on board, had to divert to New Caledonia after an engine fire warning.

A second Hercules is expected to fly out to Vanuatu on December 19, 2024, with staff from other government agencies along with two emergency response NZDF personnel.

Meanwhile, one of the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) P8-A Poseidon Royals conducted a surveillance flight on December 18, 2024 over key infrastructure sites in Port Vila, such as the airport, runway and port, as well as immediate surrounding islands.

According to local media Radio New Zealand (RNZ), Fire and Emergency New Zealand is also sending 34 Urban Search and Rescue personnel to help with the rescue mission.

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, on December 17, 2024, at approximately 09:47 local time.

Reuters reported 14 confirmed deaths and more than 200 injured. Rescuers continue to search for survivors in challenging conditions. 

A National Disaster Management Office report said the two main reservoirs serving Port Vila were shattered, leaving the capital with no running water. Communications are patchy after infrastructure for telecommunications in the capital were also damaged.
