Martedì 13 ottobre presso i cantieri navali Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, alla presenza del ministro della Difesa Nobuo Kishi, è avvenuto il varo del primo dei tre, al momento in costruzione, battelli della classe Taigei (SS-513) che entreranno in servizio presso la Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force a partire dal 2022.

Il design del nuovo battello è molto simile alla classe Soryu (2,950 ton), rispetto alla quale risulta più pesante di 100 ton, e presenta una lunghezza di 84,0 m, larghezza 9,1 m e pescaggio 10,4 m.
