Philippine Airlines flight bound for LAX diverts to Tokyo due to cabin smoke
A Philippine Airlines (PAL) aircraft bound for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) was forced to divert to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) due to smoke in the cabin.
Flight PR 102 departed Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) at around 22:14 local time on April 9, 2025.
Philippine media reported that smoke emerged in the cabin of the B777-300ER (with registration RPC 7782), though it was unclear when in the flight this occurred.
Philippine Airlines confirmed with local media that the smoke was caused by an air conditioning unit in the cabin.
The flight was then forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Haneda Airport.

The aircraft was able to land safely in Haneda Airport at 03:39 local time, on April 10, 2025. All 355 passengers on board were safe, and there were no reports of injuries.
Philippine Transportation Secretary Vince Hizon said he had instructed the CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines) and the Civil Aeronautics Board to look into the incident.
Hizon also issued a show cause order to Philippine Airlines after his department received reports that PAL had failed to assist passengers of flight PR102 after landing in Japan.
“Upon landing, it was noted that no ground personnel or transport support were available to assist the passengers,” the document read.
The show cause order also noted what passengers are entitled to under the Air Passenger Bill of Rights, such as timely assistance, accommodation, and information during delays, cancellations, and diversions.
Meanwhile, PAL assured the media that it is coordinating with Philippine government authorities and local airport authorities in Haneda.
American comedian and actor Jo Koy and his family were among those on the flight. Koy took the time to upload a story to Instagram, where he commended PAL flight attendants and said they were “amazing”.
“Thank you for remaining calm in a situation where it could have gone south bad [sic].“We are safe, we are in Tokyo, and our next flight out is in nine hours, so we’re going to have some Sake,” Koy said.
