Its safety record is significantly better than previous generations of fighter engines across their entire life cycle.
To ensure sustained mission readiness, Pratt & Whitney operates a robust sustainment network that supports numerous global depot facilities, bases, and ships. With the growing importance of Agile Combat Employment – a concept that focuses on enhancing survivability and generating combat power by utilizing smaller, dispersed locations – the F135 engine’s widespread infrastructure enables seamless logistics and maintenance, ensuring operational flexibility and rapid response capabilities.
As the F-35 continues to evolve to counter emerging threats, the F135 will also be upgraded to meet new demands. The Engine Core Upgrade (ECU), which draws on the experience gained from advanced engine programs, will build upon the engine’s successful track record and provide enhanced performance to stay ahead of potential adversaries.
