Qatar Airways restarts Syrian service after more than a decade absence
Qatar Airways is to restart flights to Syria after an absence of more than a decade, which began in 2011 due to the breakout of a devastating civil war that plunged the country into chaos.
On January 2, 2025, Qatar Airways confirmed that it will begin a thrice weekly service between Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Damascus International Airport (DAM) in Syria.
The move comes after the former president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, was ousted by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other opposition groups, including the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA).
Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of HTS, has said the group, which many countries consider a terrorist organization, wants to protect civilians, all minority groups and implement a peaceful transition of power.
In a statement, Qatar Airways said the “decision to restart operations to Syria reflects the airline’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting passenger demand”.
The Qatari flag carrier is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary safety, security and operational standards are met ahead of the relaunch.
Qatar Airways Group CEO, Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “We are pleased to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance. This announcement underscores our dedication to fostering connectivity and facilitating travel for our passengers.”
According to flightradar24, airlines including Syrian Air, UR Airlines and Cham Wings Airlines are all currently operating flights to Damascus.
An Egyptair flight from Cairo is also scheduled to arrive in Damascus on January 4, 2025.
