Riga airport sees 7% traffic rise, reports 19K flights and 2M travelers in 2025
Riga Airport (RIX) recorded a 7% increase in traffic in the first four months of 2025 compared to the same time last year, serving more than two million passengers and conducting 19,000 flights.
In a press release published on May 12, 2025, the airport said the number of direct passengers increased by 8% to 1.87 million compared to the same time last year. Of these passengers, 81% were direct travelers, while 19% used Riga for transfers.
In April 2025 alone, the airport handled more than over 581,000 passengers, a 6% rise from April 2024, and managed 5,239 flights, along with 1,450 tons of air cargo. Since the start of the year, air cargo volume reached 6,100 tons, a 13% increase from 2024.
Overall, the number of passengers, cargo, and flights in January-April 2025 rose by 7%, totaling 19,000 flights compared to the same period last year.
In a recent interview with AeroTime, Riga Airport CEO Laila Odina said demand for the airport remains largely dependent on the geopolitical situation. Before the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical disruptions, around 16% of Riga Airport passengers came from markets that are now currently closed.
Odina said leisure travel remains the primary driver of passenger traffic at Riga Airport and accounted for 50% of all trips in 2024. In contrast, business travel has dropped to 22%, while the share of personal travel remains stable.
For the upcoming summer season of 2025, Odina said the airport currently offers 100 direct destinations, making it the most extensive network in the Baltics, featuring 40 locations. The airport is also working to attract airlines to provide services to destinations that are currently not served.
