Russia fires 629 drones and missiles at Ukraine, at least 14 killed in Kyiv
Russia launched 629 aerial weapons across Ukraine overnight into August 28, 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force said in its daily update. The reported tally included 598 Shahed-type attack drones and decoys, as well as 31 missiles of various types.
According to the Air Force, Ukrainian air defenses downed or suppressed 589 targets, including 563 drones and 26 missiles. The missile salvo reportedly comprised two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, nine Iskander-M or KN-23 ballistic missiles, and 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles. Impacts were recorded at 13 sites, and debris fell across 26 localities.
Local officials and international media reported damage at more than 20 locations across seven districts, including residential buildings and a shopping center. Offices of the European Union mission and the British Council in Kyiv were also damaged.
Kyiv declares day of mourning
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 29, 2025, a day of mourning following the attack, which left at least 14 people dead and 48 injured in the capital. Search and rescue operations continued in the Darnytskyi district, where a residential building suffered heavy damage.
Municipal authorities said flags would be flown at half-mast on city buildings, and entertainment events are banned for the day.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the overnight strikes as “terror and barbarity,” calling them “senseless attacks of great cruelty” and expressing “full support” for Ukraine and the bereaved families in a message posted on X.
Moscow claims military targets hit
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it carried out a “group strike” using long-range, high-precision weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and attack drones. It claimed that the strikes targeted defense-industrial sites and military air bases and that “all assigned objectives were hit.”
Moscow regularly claims it only targets military infrastructure, but strikes have repeatedly caused civilian casualties and widespread damage across Ukrainian cities. The post Russia fires 629 drones and missiles at Ukraine, at least 14 killed in Kyiv appeared first on AeroTime.
