Russia warns US missile launcher in Norway is a wartime target

Russia’s Foreign Ministry declared that the deployment sites, command facilities and supporting infrastructure of a US Navy containerized missile launcher brought to Norway had become a focus for Russian strategic deterrence forces, including their planning for the combat use of strike weapons in the event of an armed conflict. 

The statement was issued on September 7, 2026, as a written answer by ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova to a question from the media. She said that the appearance in Europe of US systems capable of launching intermediate and shorter-range missiles amounted to another step in what she described as a series of destabilizing actions by NATO countries. 

According to Zakharova, the systems can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles, and siting them in Norway would allow a substantial sector of European Russia, including Moscow, to be covered. She added that such deployments negate the conditions for a strategic stability dialogue with the United States. 

Separately, on September 7, 2026, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Norwegian military construction directed at Russia was grounds for additional Russian security measures.

US Air Force C-17A delivered Navy launcher to Trondheim 

A US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III delivered a US Navy Containerized Launching System to Trondheim on August 27, 2026, for Operation Atlantic City 26, according to a US Marine Corps release. 

The Norwegian Armed Forces said on August 21, 2026, that the operation would run from August 26 to September 4, 2026, on and around Jan Mayen island, as part of Arctic Sentry, NATO’s enhanced initiative for the High North. That release does not mention Trondheim or the launcher. The operation concluded as scheduled on September 4, 2026.
