Sanaa Airport ‘completely destroyed’ after Israel launches strikes on Houthis
Sanaa International Airport (SAH) has been “completely destroyed” following Israel’s latest round of attacks against Iran-backed Houthis fighters inside Yemen.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that fighter jets struck Yemen’s main airport on May 6, 2025, describing the location as a “central hub for the Houthi terrorist regime”.
Israel said that Sanaa Airport was being used to “transfer weapons and operatives” and underlined the “brutal exploitation of civilian infrastructure”.
An airport official told AFP that three Yemenia Airlines aircraft had been destroyed in the attack as well as the airport itself. There were unconfirmed reports that the aircraft included two A320s and one A330-200.
Israel said that the strike was carried out in retaliation after Houthis launched an attack against Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) on May 4, 2025.
The missile attack, which saw sirens sounding across Israel, briefly saw the airport close and around four people were reportedly injured.
The following day on May 5, 2025, Israel Defense Forces responded and hit targets across Yemen’s coastline.
Israel said that its latest attacks against Sanaa Airport were “carried out with precision and steps were taken to mitigate harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure”.
“The IDF is determined to continue operating—at any distance—against all threats posed to the citizens of the State of Israel,” a statement said.
In response to the growing dangers in the area several airlines decided to temporarily cancel flights to Ben Gurion Airport.
Israel was reportedly unhappy with the decision due to the perception that airlines were cowing to Houthi aggression.
Carriers that announced suspension of flights included Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Ryanair, Air France-KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa Group.
“Due to the current situation, SWISS is suspending flights to/from Tel Aviv until 06 May. Affected passengers will be notified and can choose a free rebooking or a full refund,” SWISS wrote on social media.
