Singapore Changi Airport officially breaks ground on Terminal 5 construction
Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 14, 2025 to mark the start of construction of Terminal 5 (T5).
Prime Minister of Singapore and Minister of Finance Lawrence Wong officiated the ceremony.
Changi Airport’s story mirrors Singapore’s — bold, visionary, and undaunted by challenges. Two years ago, I stood on the site where Terminal 5 would one day rise. Today, we break ground and begin building this next chapter in our aviation journey. pic.twitter.com/KkWjdEiFSg— Lawrence Wong (@LawrenceWongST) May 14, 2025 Wong said that Terminal 5 will boost Changi’s capacity by over 50%, and will serve as the new home of the Singapore Airlines Group (SAG). He added that the new terminal will alsosupport Singapore’s ambition to reach more than 200 city links worldwide.
The COVID-19 pandemic halted the long-awaited construction of Terminal 5, which is expected to be operational by the mid-2030s. T5 will be linked to existing terminals at Changi Airport, so that the airport can operate as a single integrated air hub.
It is designed to handle around 50 million passengers annually in its first phase of opening.

T5 will transform the airport into a ground transportation center, bringing together train, bus, taxi and other transport services. It will enhance Changi’s connectivity to the rest of Singapore, making the airport accessible not just for travel, but also as a destination for local residents to enjoy.
T5 will also be a Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy building, which is more energy-efficient. It will be powered by more clean energy to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint, and be equipped with building management systems.

“Our vision is for T5 to be mega yet cozy, a terminal that embraces the Changi DNA – delivering a personalised, stress free and positively surprising airport experience. As a new gateway to Singapore, T5 offers new possibilities and will bring new surprises. It will offer yet another vibrant space for families, friends and the airport community to gather and bond,” Yam Kum Weng, Chief Executive Officer, Changi Airport Group, said in a statement.
