South Korean and US Firms Plan to Adapt Midnight eVTOL for Runway-Independent Military Transport

Korean Air plans to adapt Archer Aviation’s Midnight eVTOL aircraft for South Korean military transport, rescue, and support missions. The initiative could provide Seoul with a lower-signature, runway-independent aircraft capable of moving small teams and critical supplies over short distances.
Korean Air is expected to lead the aircraft’s military modification and mission-system integration. At the same time, Archer provides engineering support and draws on experience gained through U.S. military airworthiness assessments and flight testing of the Midnight aircraft. Proposed roles include personnel transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, special operations support, and selected short-range logistics missions. The partners are also examining the phased localization of aircraft-conversion technologies and potential exports to third countries.

The initiative is based on a civilian platform that has already entered military testing in the United States rather than on immediately developing a new aircraft. This approach is intended to reduce initial technical risk and give the South Korean aerospace industry access to certification data that would take considerable time to generate independently. The two companies are still finalizing their respective responsibilities and the terms of their technical cooperation.
In a statement released on August 3, 2026, Korean Air described the program as a model of technological cooperation between South Korea and the United States. The company intends to oversee aircraft modification, systems integration, military airworthiness, the phased localization of relevant technologies, and future access to export markets. Selection for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration’s Rapid Demonstration Project would allow the aircraft’s military utility to be assessed before any procurement decision is made.
The project follows an agreement announced by both companies in October 2025. At that time, Archer designated Korean Air as its partner for introducing the Midnight in South Korea, initially for government applications, with the agreement allowing for the possible purchase of up to 100 aircraft. The August 3 announcement gives the partnership a clearer military orientation, although it was issued solely by Korean Air and does not constitute a new joint announcement by Archer.
The Midnight is a piloted eVTOL aircraft equipped with 12 propellers in a configuration described as “12 tilt 6.” Six forward propellers tilt between the vertical-lift and cruise-flight positions, while six rear units provide lift during takeoff and landing. Archer states that the aircraft can carry one pilot and four passengers and has a payload capacity of more than 454 kilograms, a maximum speed of approximately 241 kilometers per hour, and a theoretical range of approximately 161 kilometers. Nevertheless, the aircraft is optimized for commercial routes of approximately 32 kilometers.
Archer’s relationship with the U.S. Air Force provides a practical reference for the South Korean project. In August 2024, the company delivered its first Midnight aircraft to the service under the AFWERX Agility Prime program after the U.S. Department of Defense approved a military airworthiness assessment. The related contracts, valued at up to $142 million, cover as many as six aircraft, the sharing of flight-test and certification data, pilot training, and the development of maintenance and repair capabilities.
This experience could help Korean Air develop evaluation, technical support, and airworthiness procedures for the Midnight. However, it does not eliminate the constraints associated with military conversion. Installing secure radios, data terminals, medical equipment, or military navigation systems would add weight and reduce the aircraft’s available range. Its payload capacity would also remain insufficient for it to replace a medium transport helicopter or carry a full infantry squad.
Archer is also developing defense-related capabilities beyond the Midnight. In July 2026, Archer and Anduril unveiled an autonomous VTOL platform using series-hybrid propulsion. The military variant, known as Thunder, is described as a Group 5 autonomous attack aircraft intended to operate alongside piloted attack and assault helicopters. The cooperation with Anduril indicates that Archer is active in several areas relevant to military aviation, including electric and hybrid propulsion, autonomy, tiltrotor technology, and the production of dual-use platforms.
The Midnight would be most suitable for short-range links between bases, isolated posts, and locations lacking conventional runways. In South Korea, it could evacuate casualties, transport a small medical team, or deliver blood products, ammunition, and spare parts to positions in mountainous terrain. Among the Yellow Sea archipelagos, it could connect nearby military installations without requiring a heavier helicopter. Its operation would still depend on a dense network of charging facilities and would remain risky in areas covered by active air defenses.
For Seoul, the project’s principal value lies in creating a transport capability that bridges the gap between helicopters, ground vehicles, and logistics drones. The Midnight could provide operational experience in certification, maintenance, charging infrastructure, and systems integration. Over time, this foundation could support cooperation on longer-range autonomous platforms such as Thunder. South Korea would gain access to U.S. standards while developing its own industrial base, with implications for defense exports and international competition in military air mobility.
