Tecnam teases high-performance Rivale with Continental CD-300 diesel engine

A light rain began to fall as several hundred people gathered around a mysterious shape hidden beneath a black cloak at the Tecnam booth at EAA AirVenture 2026.

Representatives from several competing piston-aircraft manufacturers stood in the crowd to witness the reveal, making the name Tecnam was about to share seem especially appropriate.

Rivale — the Italian word for rival.

When Tecnam pulled away the shroud on July 21, 2026, it did not reveal a complete airplane. The company showed only the Rivale’s muscular, sculpted nose, as a metal sculpture extended behind it, spelling the aircraft’s name in flowing cursive script.

The unusual presentation offered the first physical glimpse of Tecnam’s new high-performance, single-engine piston aircraft while keeping most of the rest of the design hidden.

Tecnam was tight-lipped about many additional details, as well, but the company did identify several key suppliers. The Rivale will use a 300-horsepower Continental CD-300 turbodiesel engine, Garmin’s new G2000 Prime integrated flight deck, an MT-Propeller, Beringer wheels and brakes and Michelin tires.

Beyond that, Tecnam would only say that additional details would be forthcoming.

The manufacturer did not disclose the Rivale’s performance targets, seating configuration, price, certification schedule or planned entry-into-service date. Tecnam said the full aircraft reveal will take place at AERO Friedrichshafen in April 2027.

The Continental CD-300 also powers the Diamond DA50 RG, a five-seat, retractable-gear aircraft aimed at the premium personal and business travel market. The Rivale will also enter territory occupied by the Cirrus SR22T, the dominant high-performance piston single.

Tecnam has not formally named either aircraft as a competitor, but its choice of engine, avionics and premium suppliers places the Rivale squarely in that segment.

The company described the airplane as its most ambitious expression of Italian aircraft design and the beginning of a “new era of personal flying.”

Giovanni Pascale Langer, Tecnam’s managing director, said the company began the project by asking what the personal flying market still lacked.

The answer, Tecnam suggested, was not simply another aircraft defined by specifications and performance figures. The company wants the Rivale to combine speed and utility with the design, refinement and ownership experience associated with Italian luxury products.

“The aircraft remains to be discovered,” Pascale Langer said during the presentation.

Garmin will bring technology from its G3000 Prime system into the lighter-aircraft market through the Rivale’s G2000 Prime flight deck. Garmin introduced G2000 Prime shortly before AirVenture 2026 for high-performance piston and electric aircraft. The system uses large, edge-to-edge touchscreen displays, faster processors and an interface derived from the turbine-class G3000 Prime system.

Continental President and CEO Karen Hong confirmed that the Rivale will use the company’s FADEC-controlled CD-300 engine. The liquid-cooled, twin-turbocharged V6 burns Jet-A and is expected to provide a fuel burn of about 10 gallons per hour. Its use in the Rivale puts the new airplane in direct competition with the Diamond DA50 RG, although the two aircraft may differ considerably once Tecnam reveals the Rivale’s complete configuration.

Given the Rivale’s position above Tecnam’s existing P2010 line, the airplane will slot into a market where prices extend well above $1 million. Any specific estimate, however, will have to wait until Tecnam releases more information.

The Rivale project has reportedly been in development for about three years. Tecnam calls it a new flagship for personal flying rather than an extension of one of its existing models.
