Territorial encounter: Iran’s SH-3 Sea King meets USS Fitzgerald in Gulf of Oman
An encounter between Iran’s SH-3 Sea King helicopter and US Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald occurred in the morning of July 23, 2025 in the Gulf of Oman.
According to Iranian State media Press TV, Iranian forces dispatched its SH-3 Sea King helicopter to confront the USS Fitzgerald after the vessel “attempted to approach the waters under the supervision” of Iran.

According to the Iran-state controlled media, the SH-3 Sea King “forced” the USS Fitzgerald to retreat from Iranian waters even after the destroyer “threatened to shoot it down”.
Press TV published video and images of the incident, the first direct encounter reported between Iranian and US forces since the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June 2025.
The US Central Command, however, disputed the Iranian version of the encounter, calling the incident a “safe and professional interaction”, and that it had no impact on the USS Fitzgerald’s naval mission.
A report by Reuters quoted the US Central Command saying that “any reports claiming otherwise are falsehoods” and attempts by Iran to spread misinformation.
