Turkish Air Force F-16 crashes near Yalova during training, pilot ejects

A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter crashed during a training flight in the northwestern province of Yalova on August 12, 2026, with the pilot ejecting and surviving, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense said.

In a statement published on the Turkish social platform NSosyal, the ministry said a Turkish F-16 assigned to a squadron of the 1st Main Jet Base at Eskişehir was involved in an accident at Yalova during a training flight and that the pilot ejected safely. It added that the cause would be established after a detailed investigation.

No casualties on the ground

Yalova governor Ahmet Hamdi Usta, who visited the site, told reporters the aircraft came down at around 15:00 local time immediately next to the 18th Main Base Command, a Turkish Air Force military installation located in Yalova Province, northwestern Turkey. He said the pilot was recovered unharmed and that there were no casualties among civilian or military personnel on the ground.

Teams from the Turkish disaster agency AFAD, national medical rescue units and the fire service were dispatched to the scene. The wreckage was reached without a fire breaking out, and an accident investigation team had begun technical work. Turkish outlet Türkiye Today reported that the pilot was taken to Yalova Training and Research Hospital.

Asked whether a mid-air collision had taken place, Usta said the accident involved a single aircraft and that no collision occurred. He said the jet had probably suffered a technical problem, while stressing that the investigation board would determine the cause.

Usta said the F-16 had taken off from Eskişehir. Air Force Academy students and candidates are in training at the Yalova site, and jets from Eskişehir or Bandırma periodically fly there to encourage the trainees.

The accident is the second F-16 the Turkish Air Force has lost in 2026. On February 25, 2026, a jet from the 9th Main Jet Base Command went down shortly after a night departure from Balıkesir, killing its pilot, Major İbrahim Bolat.
