Turkish Airlines bid for minority share in Air Europa accepted by owners
Turkish Airlines has confirmed that its offer for a minority stake in Spanish carrier Air Europa has been accepted by the company owners.
In a public disclosure on August 19, 2025, Turkish Airlines said that the approved agreement involves an investment of $349 million (€300 million).
According to Turkish Airlines, the offer was made to Air Europa to “strengthen its strategic position in the global aviation industry and increase the number of tourists visiting Turkey”.
Turkish Airlines added that the deal would contribute economically by “opening new tourism markets in Latin America and expanding passenger and cargo flight network between Spain and Turkey”.
“We have been informed that the binding offer submitted by our Company has been accepted by Air Europa, and the process has now moved to the preparation of transaction documentation and the commencement of official procedures related to closing,” a spokesperson for Turkish Airlines said.
They added that most of the $349 million investment will be in the “form of a capital increase, with the exact percentage of the minority stake to be acquired to be determined following technical and financial adjustments at the closing stage”.
The process to secure the minority share is expected to take around six to 12 months, subject to obtaining approvals from the relevant regulatory authorities.
Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM also expressed interest in obtaining a minority share in Air Europa, but both airline groups walked away from discussions within the last few weeks.
The Hidalgo family, through their Globalia travel consortium, are currently the largest stakeholder (80%) of Air Europa’s shares.
IAG, owner of British Airways, Iberia, and Vueling, currently holds a 20% minority stake in Air Europa.
