Turkish company showcases new ground-effect maritime kamikaze drone: video
The ground-in-wing space has seen lots of activity in the last few months. The latest aircraft of this sort to make an appearance is the Turkish-developed “Talay”.
The Talay is a maritime kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which is designed to skim the surface of water at high speeds and very low altitudes by using the physical principle known as “ground effect”.
On its website, SoliAERO discloses that the Talay is able to cruise efficiently at 3 meters above the sea in order to remain under radar coverage. It has also been reported that this craft can drop to altitudes below one meter if needed, to avoid detection.
When it comes to its payload and speed capabilities, the Talay is able to carry 30 kg of sensors or munitions and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. It is also capable of operating either autonomously or through the guidance of a remote operator.
SoliAERO has reportedly developed the Talay in collaboration with Turkish shipbuilder Yonca Shipyard.
On July 8, 2025, SolidAERO released a video that purportedly shows flight tests being conducted with a prototype of this new unmanned aircraft at an unidentified location.

The SolidAERO is one of the exhibitors at IDEF 2025, an international defense trade show taking place in Istanbul from July 22 to 27, 2025.
First pioneered by the Soviets during the Cold War, ground-effect vehicles are experiencing a renaissance. Despite DARPA’s recent cancellation of the Liberty Lifter program, US private companies like REGENT are still going ahead with the development and sea trials of a ground effect vehicle that will have dual civilian and military uses. China also appears to have also entered the fray with the testing of its own ground-effect military vehicle.
