Two dead after Cessna and Lancair collide midair at Arizona airport
Two people have died after a Cessna 172S and Lancair 360 MK II collided midair over Marana Regional Airport, near Tucson in Arizona.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that there were two people aboard the Cessna and Lancair aircraft when the crash occurred at around 08.25 on February 19, 2025.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) later confirmed that the single-engine planes “collided while upwind of runway 12”.
“The Cessna landed uneventfully; the Lancair impacted terrain near runway 3 and a post-impact fire ensued,” the NTSB said in a statement.
According to the Associated Press, the Cessna operator, AeroGuard, said that its two pilots were not injured in the incident.
Following the midair collision the Marana Police Department attended the crash scene and reported that two people had been “tragically” killed, resulting in the airport’s closure.
“On behalf of the Town of Marana and the Marana Regional Airport, our hearts go out to all the individuals and families impacted by this event,” said Airport Superintendent Galen Beem. “This is an unprecedented event, and we are grateful for the swift response from the Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire District.”
A NTSB investigator is understood to be attending the crash scene on February 20, 2025, to try and establish what happened.
Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled field with no air traffic control tower.
The United States is reeling from a spate of fatal aircraft incidents in recent weeks including a crash between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Eagle Bombardier CRJ700 on January 29, 2025.
There were 60 passengers and four aircraft crew on board the American Eagle flight and three US Army soldiers on the Black Hawk. There were no survivors.
Then on January 31, 2025, six people onboard a Jet Rescue Learjet 55 ambulance aircraft were killed shortly after takeoff in Philadelphia.
Finally, the wreckage of a Cessna Caravan which disappeared in Alaska on February 6, 2025, was located with no survivors among the 10 people onboard the flight.
