U.S. Air Force B-52 Bomber Gets New IRIS Satellite Communications System to Improve Long-Range Connectivity

The U.S. Air Force has fielded the IRIS beyond-line-of-sight communications prototype on the B-52 Stratofortress, Air Force Global Strike Command announced on October 1, 2026, giving the strategic bomber a new channel for long-range voice and data connectivity. The upgrade strengthens the B-52’s ability to remain connected during dispersed global strike missions as the aircraft is prepared to serve into the 2050s.
IRIS combines satellite communications with aircraft and ground components, and flight testing in March demonstrated reliable airborne connectivity through approved networks before multiple kits entered operational use. The capability provides an interim path toward more resilient beyond-line-of-sight communications, supporting the wider modernization of the B-52 for future long-range strike and deterrence missions.

On October 1, 2026, Air Force Global Strike Command announced the operational fielding of the IRIS beyond-line-of-sight communications prototype on the B-52 Stratofortress, marking a significant step in the bomber’s continuing modernization. Developed by Louisiana-based Outerlink Global Solutions, the system gives B-52 crews an additional satellite-enabled pathway for exchanging information across the enormous distances inherent to global strike missions. The development is particularly important as the United States prepares the B-52 to remain a central conventional and nuclear-capable long-range strike platform into the 2050s. According to AFGSC, IRIS is already supporting training and operational employment while remaining under continued test and evaluation as a prototype.
IRIS integrates a satellite communications terminal with airborne and ground components designed to provide beyond-line-of-sight connectivity for the B-52. The program moved decisively toward operational use during early 2026: ground and flight testing in March demonstrated reliable airborne connectivity through approved network pathways, after which the B-52 System Program Office approved the capability for flight testing. By April 1, multiple IRIS kits had been installed on B-52 aircraft and delivered to the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron for training and operational employment. The significance lies not simply in installing another radio or terminal, but in providing crews with another route for command-and-control information when operating far beyond terrestrial communications coverage. AFGSC has nevertheless been careful to describe IRIS as a fielded prototype rather than a completed fleet-wide communications architecture, indicating that additional testing will shape the command’s longer-term BLOS solution.
The capability is the product of a development path that began years before the 2026 fielding milestone. During a June 22, 2022 demonstration at Barksdale Air Force Base, the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron flew an IRIS-equipped B-52 while the 608th Air Operations Center assessed the transfer of voice, data, imagery and video. That configuration paired IRIS with an Iridium Certus terminal operating through the Iridium NEXT low-Earth-orbit constellation. Air Force reporting at the time stated that Certus could provide L-band bandwidth of up to 704 Kbps, compared with 2.4 Kbps associated with the older Iridium service. Following the demonstration, AFGSC used an AFWERX Small Business Innovation Research Phase II contract to advance integration before transitioning the effort in 2023 into a $26 million Strategic Funding Increase contract, the first STRATFI agreement designated to the command. The progression illustrates a broader Pentagon objective: using commercially available communications technology and accelerated acquisition pathways to place useful capabilities aboard operational aircraft faster than traditional modernization cycles often permit.
For the B-52, better BLOS connectivity has implications extending well beyond routine communications. Long-range bombers may operate thousands of kilometers from their main operating bases and could need updated mission information, command instructions or other time-sensitive data while airborne. Earlier Air Force testing of IRIS specifically evaluated near-real-time transfer of imagery and other data between the bomber and an air operations center, demonstrating the potential value of greater bandwidth for dynamic command and control. In a contested environment, the ability to exchange information rapidly can influence how effectively a bomber reacts to changing threats, revised operational priorities and evolving targeting requirements. However, greater bandwidth should not automatically be equated with greater survivability: AFGSC has not publicly characterized IRIS as a replacement for hardened strategic communications. Its immediate value is better understood as expanding the B-52’s available connectivity options and increasing operational flexibility within a broader communications ecosystem.
That distinction becomes especially important when IRIS is viewed alongside another B-52 communications modernization effort highlighted by Army Recognition Group in its article, “U.S. Air Force Moves to Reinforce B-52 Global Strike Communications With $17M SATCOM Upgrade.” That separate initiative involves $17 million in competitive agreements with Magee Technologies, Northrop Grumman and Sierra Nevada Corporation to mature alternative approaches for integrating upgraded Extremely High Frequency satellite communications on the B-52. The $17 million should not be interpreted as a fleet-wide installation award; it represents a competitive development and risk-reduction phase aimed at identifying an integration solution for protected and survivable communications.
Taken together, the two efforts reveal a more consequential strategy than either program shows individually: the Air Force is building multiple communications layers around the B-52, pairing rapidly deployable BLOS connectivity such as IRIS with future protected SATCOM intended for the bomber’s most demanding conventional and strategic missions. Such diversification could become increasingly important as satellite communications, data links and command networks face electronic warfare, cyber threats and potential attacks against space-based infrastructure.
The operational fielding of IRIS represents more than a communications upgrade for an aircraft designed in another technological era. It demonstrates how AFGSC is attempting to modernize the B-52’s digital connectivity in parallel with major improvements to its engines, radar, avionics, weapons and other mission systems, while avoiding dependence on a single communications pathway. IRIS provides a near-term, operationally usable BLOS capability, while continued testing and the separate protected SATCOM effort point toward a progressively more layered architecture for future missions. As the B-52 evolves toward decades of additional service, its combat relevance will increasingly depend not only on how far it can fly or what weapons it can carry, but on whether it can remain connected, informed and responsive across a battlespace in which communications themselves are likely to be contested.
