U.S. Air Force Expands F-15EX Fleet With New Order for 22 Long-Range Strike Fighters

The U.S. Air Force is adding 22 Boeing F-15EX Eagle II fighters under a new Lot 7 production contract, expanding a heavy fighter fleet built to carry large missile loads, advanced sensors, and long-range strike weapons. The award brings the number of F-15EX aircraft under contract to 120, giving the service greater capacity for high-volume air combat while replacing aging F-15C/D fighters.
The F-15EX combines a large weapons payload with modern avionics and long-range strike capability, allowing it to support air superiority, stand-off attack, and heavily armed missile-carrier missions. Its growing fleet strengthens the U.S. ability to sustain combat power in contested theaters where range, payload, and magazine depth are increasingly important.

The U.S. Air Force announced the Lot 7 award on September 29, 2026, after negotiations preserved the planned 22-aircraft quantity despite inflation and a 2025 production disruption. Boeing values the contract at about $2.38 billion, and the latest order extends F-15EX production across Lots 1 through 7. The company is currently delivering Lot 3 aircraft and is working with the Air Force toward a production rate of two fighters per month, a pace that would accelerate the replacement of legacy Eagles and help expand the number of combat-ready F-15EX units.
The F-15EX is the newest U.S. version of the Eagle family and is designed as a heavily armed multirole fighter rather than a low-observable aircraft. It combines digital fly-by-wire flight controls, a modern cockpit, advanced mission computers, an open mission systems architecture, and an active electronically scanned array radar. The aircraft also carries the Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System, or EPAWSS, which is intended to improve threat detection, electronic protection, and survivability in contested electromagnetic environments.
Its principal battlefield advantage is payload capacity. The F-15EX can carry a significantly larger weapons load than smaller tactical fighters, allowing it to operate as a high-capacity missile carrier in air-superiority missions or as a launcher for heavy and long-range air-to-surface weapons. That capacity gives the aircraft an important complementary role alongside F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters, which can operate closer to heavily defended areas while the F-15EX contributes additional missile volume and standoff firepower from less exposed positions.
This combination is particularly relevant in the Indo-Pacific, where long distances, limited numbers of forward operating bases and pressure on aerial-refueling assets can restrict the number of aircraft available over a combat area. A fighter capable of carrying a large number of air-to-air missiles or heavy strike weapons can increase the amount of combat power delivered per sortie, reducing the number of aircraft required to generate a given volume of fire. In that context, the F-15EX offers the Air Force a way to add weapons mass and endurance to a force increasingly centered on fifth-generation aircraft.
The new aircraft will also support the continued retirement of F-15C and F-15D fighters, many of which have accumulated decades of operational use. Replacing those aircraft with the F-15EX gives the U.S. Air Force a modernized Eagle fleet with updated avionics, electronic warfare systems, and a digital architecture designed to accept future sensors, weapons, and mission-system upgrades. This reduces the operational burden associated with sustaining older airframes while preserving the long-range and heavy-payload characteristics that have made the F-15 family valuable for air-defense and air-superiority missions.
Production continuity is therefore central to the Lot 7 award. The U.S. Air Force officials said the negotiations had to account for inflation across the defense industrial base and the consequences of a 2025 production disruption, yet the service and Boeing maintained the full 22-aircraft quantity within available funding. Keeping the production line moving matters not only for deliveries but also for maintaining the workforce, suppliers, and manufacturing capacity needed to support follow-on F-15EX procurement.
The contract also comes as the F-15EX begins assuming a larger role in U.S. force posture in the Western Pacific. The first aircraft designated for eventual permanent assignment to Kadena Air Base in Japan departed Boeing’s St. Louis facility on August 28, 2026, for additional preparation at Portland Air National Guard Base. Kadena is transitioning from the F-15C/D to the F-15EX as the Air Force rebuilds a permanently assigned modern fighter presence at one of its most strategically important bases in the region.
Earlier F-15EX deployments to Kadena have also been used to prepare pilots, maintainers and support personnel for permanent operations with the aircraft. These activities allow the U.S. Air Force to refine maintenance procedures, sustainment arrangements and operational tactics before the Eagle II becomes part of the base’s long-term force structure. Once established in Japan, the aircraft is expected to support air defense, long-range interception, air superiority, and standoff strike missions across the first island chain.
The F-15EX is particularly suited to that mission set because its value does not depend on low observability. Instead, it contributes through weapons capacity, radar performance, electronic warfare capability, range, and compatibility with aerial refueling. In a combined force, the aircraft can operate with stealth fighters, tankers, airborne command aircraft, and distributed sensors, providing additional firepower while maintaining survivability through distance, electronic protection, and coordinated tactics.
The U.S. Air Force procurement documents also indicate that F-15EX modernization will continue beyond the current production lots. Planned investments include upgrades to bring earlier aircraft toward a common configuration, along with continued procurement of EPAWSS equipment, APG-82 radars, conformal fuel tanks, training systems, spare parts, and support equipment. Follow-on acquisition planning also points to continued production beyond Lot 7, showing that the Air Force sees the Eagle II as a long-term element of its tactical aviation structure rather than a short transitional program.
The 22-aircraft Lot 7 order therefore strengthens both near-term production continuity and the longer-term expansion of U.S. heavy fighter capacity. As additional F-15EX aircraft enter operational units and permanent deployments begin in Japan, the Eagle II will give the U.S. Air Force greater weapons capacity, improved electronic warfare capability, and additional long-range combat mass alongside its fifth-generation fighter fleet.
