U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command successfully tested the Grasshopper Autonomous Resupply System during Exercise Northern Viking 2026 in Iceland, according to the 352d Special Operations Wing, demonstrating a new way to sustain isolated forces without exposing crews or high-value aircraft to contested airspace. Conducted from August 22 to September 3, the trials showed how autonomous aerial logistics could extend special operations reach across the strategically important High North.
Grasshopper can autonomously deliver up to 500 pounds (227 kg) of supplies and navigate toward a pre-planned destination even when GPS is degraded or unavailable. Its low-cost, expendable design could give dispersed forces a more survivable resupply option where conventional logistics networks are vulnerable, limited, or too dangerous to use.

U.S. Air Commandos of the 352d Special Operations Wing performed successful tests of the Grasshopper Autonomous Resupply System as part of Exercise Northern Viking 2026 in Iceland. The tests demonstrated the potential of the Grasshopper for sustaining isolated forces while highlighting the ability of U.S. Air Commandos to conduct operations in austere subarctic conditions.
Besides strengthening ties between the United States and NATO Allies and improving maritime readiness in the strategically important North Atlantic and Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) Gap, Exercise Northern Viking 2026 provided an opportunity to test new capabilities and operational concepts in demanding High North conditions. Held across Iceland from August 22 to September 3, the exercise brought together U.S., Icelandic and other Allied forces for training across the air, land and maritime domains.
U.S. Air Commandos of the 352d Special Operations Wing notably performed successful tests of DZYNE’s Grasshopper Autonomous Resupply System while evaluating emerging non-standard airdrop platforms for sustaining isolated ground units. The Grasshopper family of systems provides autonomous, precision aerial resupply in contested and denied environments and includes the standard Grasshopper, with a mid-range profile, and the Long-Range Grasshopper. Designed as low-cost, expendable systems not intended for recovery or reuse, they enable critical logistics missions without risking personnel or higher-value aircraft. Both variants can deliver up to 500 pounds (227 kg) of cargo with precision after deployment from a range of host aircraft. Once deployed, Grasshopper autonomously navigates and maneuvers across terrain toward a pre-planned destination and is designed to operate in GPS-denied or degraded environments. Upon reaching the designated landing zone, the system transitions to terminal descent and lands under a parachute to deliver its payload.
During Exercise Northern Viking 2026, the 352d Special Operations Wing worked alongside Allies and partners from across NATO to validate crucial High North power-projection capabilities. According to the wing, non-traditional delivery methods were used to deliver food, water, medicine and fuel while reducing risk to personnel during operations conducted far beyond normal supply lines. The exercise also allowed the unit to refine tactics, techniques and procedures associated with long-range power projection and non-standard aerial delivery in environments where established logistics networks may be limited or vulnerable.
The 352d SOW used the exercise to evaluate emerging non-standard airdrop platforms, including the Grasshopper, for sustaining isolated ground units, with the Air Force reporting successful tests of the system. The wing deployed a small contingent of aircrew, maintainers and special operations forces enablers to an austere location where they relied largely on their own organic capabilities, with support from the local community. According to the 352d SOW, conducting these missions under austere conditions helped validate its tactical adaptability and strengthen the collective defensive posture of deployed forces. Autonomous resupply systems such as the Grasshopper could make special operations aviation more agile and expand commanders’ logistical options in a region traditionally dominated by maritime forces. Lessons learned in Iceland could also be applicable to other strategically important regions where dispersed forces must operate with limited logistical infrastructure.
