U.S. Air Force Titan MS Gains Teledyne FLIR Argus XL Multi-Sensor for Counter Drone Protection

AeroVironment has selected Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Argus XL system to equip its Titan MS counter-unmanned aircraft system solution under the U.S. Air Force’s Joint Interagency Task Force 401 Domestic Shield Program. The integration expands layered counter-drone capabilities designed to better protect U.S. military bases and critical infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated unmanned aerial system threats.
The procurement is being executed under AeroVironment’s three-year, $500 million sole-source Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract supporting JIATF 401. The selection of Argus XL reinforces the program’s focus on integrating advanced sensing, command and control, and countermeasure technologies into a unified counter UAS architecture capable of defending high-value installations across the United States.

This order expands the cooperation between AeroVironment and Teledyne FLIR Defense around the Titan Multi Sensor architecture, a fixed site counter UAS solution designed to combine multiple detection technologies into a single operational picture. Earlier in July, AeroVironment received an initial $80.5 million task order under the same contract to deliver Titan MS systems for Air Force Global Strike Command. The Domestic Shield Program aims to establish continuous surveillance around sensitive military facilities and critical infrastructure, where small unmanned aircraft have become an increasingly credible threat. Rather than relying on a single sensor, the system combines complementary technologies capable of detecting threats with different flight profiles under a wide range of environmental conditions.
According to information released by Teledyne FLIR Defense on July 29, 2026, Argus XL serves as the primary detection element within this architecture. The platform combines a surveillance radar, electro optical and infrared sensors, and the company’s command and control software within a single fixed installation. This configuration enables the simultaneous tracking of multiple aerial targets while maintaining continuous situational awareness during both day and night operations. The system is also designed to archive collected data for post mission analysis, supporting the refinement of operational procedures through accumulated field experience.
Also according to Teledyne FLIR Defense, Argus XL features an open architecture that allows the integration of third party radio frequency sensors and various countermeasure systems. Operators can therefore connect electronic warfare equipment, jammers, or kinetic effectors without modifying the overall architecture. The platform provides hemispherical airspace coverage and is optimized to detect difficult targets, including small and micro drones with limited radar and thermal signatures. Such systems represent one of the main challenges for modern air defense networks because of their small size, low altitude flight profiles, and relatively low cost.
Titan MS is designed as a multisensor fusion architecture rather than a standalone weapon system. Data collected from radar, electro optical cameras, thermal imagers, and radio frequency sensors are combined into a common operational picture to accelerate threat identification and decision making. This layered approach reflects lessons drawn from recent conflicts, where commercial drones, loitering munitions, and increasingly autonomous unmanned systems have demonstrated their ability to threaten military bases, logistics hubs, and critical infrastructure. Detecting a threat early remains a prerequisite for effective engagement before it reaches its intended target.

Companies including Anduril, Raytheon, Epirus, BlueHalo, and Fortem Technologies are developing complementary solutions, reflecting the United States’ objective of fielding layered counter drone architectures capable of addressing the growing presence of unmanned aerial threats in both operational theaters and homeland defense missions.
