The U.S. Army has successfully tested the Red Wolf long-range strike missile from an MH-60 helicopter for the first time, opening the way for Black Hawk helicopters to engage targets hundreds of kilometers away. The demonstration marks a step toward extending helicopter strike capabilities beyond conventional engagement ranges while reducing exposure to enemy air defenses during operations in contested environments.

The Systems Integration Management Office of the United States Army Special Operations Aviation Command conducted the demonstration, which oversees the integration of new capabilities into U.S. special operations aircraft. The flight validated compatibility between the Red Wolf launch system and the MH-60 helicopter while assessing the missile’s flight characteristics under operational conditions. The test provides an initial technical basis for extending integration to other H-60 variants.
In a statement published on October 13, 2026, L3Harris Technologies explained that the demonstration forms part of the development of its Wolf Pack family of systems, designed for long-range precision strikes and electronic warfare missions. However, the company did not disclose the distance traveled, flight duration, or exact payload configuration used during the test. The demonstration follows several validation campaigns involving different types of aircraft and ground-based launchers.
The Red Wolf belongs to the Wolf Pack family developed by L3Harris, which includes weapons launched from different systems for long-range precision strikes and electronic warfare operations. Unlike conventional helicopter-launched missiles, which generally have more limited engagement ranges, the Red Wolf is designed to travel several hundred kilometers after launch. Its demonstrated range reaches 200 nautical miles, approximately 370 kilometers, theoretically allowing helicopters to engage distant targets without necessarily entering the engagement envelope of enemy air defense systems.

The missile measures about 1.8 meters long and features folding wings that deploy after launch. It can reach high-subsonic speeds and has a flight endurance exceeding 60 minutes. The Red Wolf combines GPS navigation with a seeker designed to engage stationary and moving targets. Its beyond-line-of-sight communication capabilities and ability to use external targeting data also provide options for striking objectives located outside the launching aircraft’s direct field of view.
One of the system’s main characteristics is its modular architecture, which allows different payloads and software configurations to be integrated into a common air vehicle. The Red Wolf is primarily intended for kinetic precision strikes, while the Green Wolf, its electronic warfare counterpart, is designed for electronic attack missions and the detection, identification, and geolocation of hostile electromagnetic emissions. Both systems support in-flight mission adjustments and coordination with other unmanned systems, allowing their employment to be adapted after launch.
The MH-60 flight follows a series of tests involving different aircraft and ground-based launchers. In September 2025, the U.S. Marine Corps conducted a live-fire test of the Red Wolf from an AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter over the Atlantic Test Range, successfully engaging a maritime target. The missile also participated in the targeting network used during the operation. These successive test campaigns are gradually expanding the number of aircraft that could employ the weapon, reducing reliance on a dedicated launch aircraft.
L3Harris reports that its Wolf Pack portfolio has now completed 60 flight demonstrations involving fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and ground-based launch systems. The evaluation campaigns have also included the integration of different communication equipment, electronic warfare payloads, and autonomy software. The experience gained is expected to support the development of a common family of weapons capable of performing different missions without requiring an entirely separate air vehicle for each operational requirement.
For U.S. Army aviation, integrating the Red Wolf into the MH-60 could change how helicopter units support reconnaissance missions, special operations, and deep-strike missions. Instead of approaching defended positions to employ shorter-range weapons, helicopters could launch these missiles from more distant locations, using intelligence collected by drones, ground units, or other aircraft. Such a configuration would expand engagement options against command posts, logistics concentrations, radar installations, and mobile military targets while potentially reducing aircrew exposure to enemy air defense systems. Its effectiveness would nevertheless depend on the availability of reliable targeting intelligence, uninterrupted communications, and mission planning.
The development also aligns with U.S. military efforts to acquire relatively affordable precision weapons capable of complementing more expensive cruise missiles. In January 2026, the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command selected L3Harris to develop, test, and produce the Red Wolf under the Marine Corps’ Precision Attack Strike Munition program. The Army’s latest demonstration expands the potential applications of this weapon family across different branches of the U.S. military, while the company continues working on production methods intended to increase industrial capacity.
The Red Wolf program also reflects the growing importance of distributed precision-strike capabilities in the international security environment. The proliferation of layered air defense systems, long-range surveillance assets, and unmanned weapons is making air operations near contested territories increasingly complex. For the United States and its allies, integrating long-range precision missiles into helicopters already in service could provide additional engagement options in Europe and the Indo-Pacific without relying exclusively on specialized combat aircraft. Although the MH-60 demonstration does not yet establish a timeline for operational deployment, it illustrates how existing helicopter fleets could acquire new strike capabilities as engagement distances increase and air defense threats become more widespread.
