The Transwing UAS is designed to carry significant payloads while maintaining the necessary range for operational effectiveness. Its dihedral folding wing system increases surface area for greater lift and load stability with less power, allowing for launch and landing on small footprints regardless of the angle. This autonomous, dual-use system offers a range of capabilities aimed at enhancing operational flexibility and efficiency. The upcoming demonstrations will feature the smaller electric version of the Transwing, with a 6.8kg payload, a cruising speed of 65 knots, and a 60nm range. Its maneuverability in austere conditions and confined spaces, coupled with beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capabilities, is intended to improve mission success in civilian and defense maritime, land, and air environments.
Traditionally, air resupply of critical items relies on manned aviation assets. Studies of 3,500 helicopter sorties revealed that 46% had a payload under 1kg and over 90% were under 25kg. The Transwing X-P4 and X-P5 variants are designed based on these findings to carry payloads that can land and launch on moving vessels and vehicles, significantly reducing the required footprint. This adaptability is intended for at-sea and land applications where autonomous operation and payload delivery are increasingly essential.

This strategic partnership between Overwatch Group and PteroDynamics was formalized on July 1, 2024, with the signing of an exclusive distribution agreement for the Transwing VTOL UAS in the UK, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Overwatch will serve as the exclusive sales representative of the Transwing for all non-commercial sales in the UK and for commercial and defense sales in the UAE and KSA. This agreement aims to expand the use of the Transwing aircraft platform outside the United States. Overwatch will leverage its engineering expertise in unmanned systems and payloads to meet customer requirements in these territories.
PteroDynamics’ Transwing system combines the speed, range, and endurance of fixed-wing aircraft with VTOL performance in an automated platform. The aircraft’s ability to fold its wings for transitions between vertical and horizontal flight, requiring no additional launch and recovery infrastructure, makes it ready for VTOL operations. Its performance characteristics offer defense and commercial operators a cost-effective, autonomous alternative for logistics resupply and other missions in remote locations without runways, traditionally conducted by crewed aircraft or other means.

Automating maritime logistics and resupply presents opportunities for commercial operators, addressing issues such as unplanned downtime in offshore oil and gas production and the logistics challenges faced by commercial sea-going vessels.
