Ukraine targets multiple fronts in Russia’s Kursk with new attacks
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched a series of new attacks in the Kursk region, catching Russian troops off guard. Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed that the strikes targeted multiple directions, significantly disrupting Russian military operations.
Kovalenko stated that Russian forces were unprepared for the extent and coordination of the Ukrainian offensive, which began on January 5, 2025.
“The Russian forces in the Kursk region are facing difficulties after being attacked on multiple fronts. This came as an unexpected development for them,” Kovalenko wrote on his Telegram channel.
Ukrainian military units have reportedly deployed mine clearance trawls, tanks, and other armored vehicles for the offensive, with approximately ten pieces of equipment involved. The attack area is heavily shielded by electronic warfare systems (EW), significantly hindering the use of Russian drones. Reports indicate that a battle is currently taking place in the Bolshoi Soldatsky neighborhood, where Russian forces have launched counterattacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported significant losses for Russia in Kursk.
“Over the last two days, in battles near the village of Makhnovka, the Russian army lost up to a battalion of North Korean infantry and Russian paratroopers. These are notable losses,” President Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.
In the meantime, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Russian troops repelled two Ukrainian assault groups.
“Around 9:00 Moscow time (06:00 GMT), in order to halt the advance of Russian troops in the Kursk direction, the enemy launched a counterattack with an assault group consisting of two tanks, a mine-clearing vehicle, and twelve armored combat vehicles with paratroopers towards Berdin village,” the Russian Defense Ministry’s statement reads.
“Artillery and aviation from the North group of Russian forces defeated the assault group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” it concluded.
The situation in Kursk remains tense, as Ukrainian troops continue to hold onto a small piece of Russian territory, hoping to gain leverage for future negotiations. Meanwhile, Russia has been reinforcing its defenses in the region, deploying additional troops, including North Korean soldiers, in its bid to regain control.
