Ukraine’s Lviv Airport hoping to re-open to scheduled flights in Spring 2025
Lviv’s international airport, located in the Oblast region in eastern Ukraine, has publicly stated an intention to reopen to regular commercial passenger services in “late Spring” of 2025, as the facility remains optimistic about a resumption of services following the publication of a Ukrainian government report.
Lviv-Danylo Halytskyi International Airport (LWO) handled 1.8 million passengers in 2021 but was forced to close in February 2022 following the invasion by Russian forces into the country. The airport has remained shut since, although several airlines have already stated that they would be willing to reintroduce services to the airport as and when it reopens to commercial operations.
As reported by The Kyiv Independent publication, the General Director of Lviv Airport, speaking with the Vysokyi Zamok media outlet on March 15, 2025, said that the gateway could reopen as early as April or May 2025 following the publication of an “optimistic scenario under government consideration.” Should this timeline not be achieved, other potential dates for the reopening of Ukraine’s airspace include the summer months of 2025, according to the General Director.

Romanovska confirmed that airlines such as Wizz Air, airBaltic, Turkish Airlines, SkyUp, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, and LOT are prepared to operate from Lviv once flights resume. “Right now, we are talking about restoring regular flights from Lviv,” Romanovska said. “[Ukrainian carrier] SkyUp Airlines will likely take the lead in bringing back charter flights, as they have a well-developed route network in Europe and are ready to resume the same routes from Lviv or another Ukrainian city,” she added.
“So far in 2025, airline representatives have reached out to us, conducted their audits, and are analyzing the situation. Wizz Air completed its audit in 2024],” Romanovska explained. She added that once a decision to reopen airspace is made, airline teams could arrive and begin operations within three to four days. “We hope the airport will reopen in the summer period because that’s when aviation traffic is at its highest, during vacations, long daylight hours, and peak travel season,” Romanovska added. “But if it happens in April or May, that would be an extremely positive development for us.”

As part of its commitment, airBaltic publically stated its intention to reintegrate Kyiv and Lviv into its route network as soon as conditions allow. Additionally, the airline plans to expand its services beyond Riga by linking Kyiv with the other Baltic capitals, such as Tallinn and Vilnius, to strengthen regional connectivity.
Additionally, the Ukrainian Government is considering reopening another airport in western Ukraine’s Uzhhorod, located directly on the border with Slovakia and in close proximity to the borders of Hungary and Poland, all of which are current NATO member states. Uzhhorod International Airport (UDJ). Serving smaller general aviation movements, the airport’s runway 10 threshold lies just 90 meters from the border with Slovakia, with approaching aircraft having to use Slovakian air space under a special licence to land at the airport.
