The inert Sentinel missile combined all three solid-propellant stages, the two interstage assemblies, the forward section, the shroud, and associated hardware, going well beyond the complete three-stage ground-test booster assembled in fall 2025.
Components were transported across the United States on purpose-built vehicles, transferred through Vandenberg’s handling chain, lifted with mobile cranes, vertically aligned, mechanically mated, checked at their interfaces and subsequently de-stacked. In parallel, the Air Force Test Center’s 719th Test Squadron completed the Design Review for the first flight test. The first five flight tests are planned from an above-ground pad beginning in 2027, while the first silo launch is scheduled for FY2030 Q3 and initial operational capability remains in the early 2030s. The missile is also only one element of a $140.9 billion acquisition program involving 400 operational missiles, approximately 450 launch facilities, 45 launch control centers, and hundreds of additional facilities spread across five states.
The Pathfinder addressed missile-level integration rather than propulsion qualification. Before September 2026, the Sentinel program had progressed through individual propulsion tests, Stage-1 and Stage-2 motor qualification, two interstage-separation tests, shroud fly-off testing, guidance-and-control sled testing, and acoustic testing of the integrated front end. The three motors must operate sequentially during boost, while each interstage simultaneously performs two opposing functions: carrying loads while the missile remains intact and then allowing the spent stage to separate cleanly at the commanded point. Pathfinder instead examined what happens before launch. Missile sections manufactured and tested at different locations had to travel across the United States, enter the Vandenberg handling chain, be lifted using specialized mobile cranes, aligned vertically, mechanically mated, and checked at their interfaces before the entire sequence was reversed during de-stacking.
The decision to begin flight testing from an above-ground pad is equally consequential because it removes the Sentinel silo from the first five launches. A February 2026 assessment still placed the first flight in March 2028, roughly four years behind the original schedule, but the subsequent restructuring allowed the Air Force to begin collecting actual flight data before a Sentinel silo is available. Those initial flights can measure ignition behavior, motor burn, acceleration, structural loads, first-to-second and second-to-third-stage separation, guidance and navigation, trajectory control, shroud separation, and integrated front-end performance. The first silo launch in FY2030 Q3 will then add the underground launch environment, silo interfaces, and associated ground equipment.
The Sentinel will maintain the existing 400-deployed-ICBM force of the U.S. nuclear triad, but the program requires substantially more missile articles than operational positions. The current acquisition plan comprises 634 production missiles plus 25 development and test missiles, or 659 missiles, leaving 259 articles beyond the 400 deployed inventory for development, operational testing, surveillance, replacement, and attrition over a service life planned through roughly 2075. The Sentinel uses three solid-propellant motors, with an Air Force-listed range exceeding 6,000 miles (5,218 nautical miles), a burnout velocity of 15,000 mph, or Mach 23, and a trajectory ceiling of 700 miles (1,120 km). It also replaces the Minuteman III, which entered service in 1970 with an original intended service life of roughly 10 years but has now operated for more than 55 years. The procurement quantity consequently reflects a decades-long inventory requirement rather than a one-for-one purchase of 400 replacement missiles. For its part, the nuclear payload modernization follows another schedule, as the Sentinel may initially employ the W87-0 warhead, rated at roughly 300 kilotons, while the newer W87-1 is planned at roughly 475 kilotons, with the first plutonium pit for W87-1 completed in October 2024.
The more difficult cost and scheduling problem is concentrated in the fixed infrastructure surrounding those missiles. The Minuteman III operates through more than 600 facilities across Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado, including 450 missile silos. Still, the Air Force decided to construct new silos because excavating and modifying those 450 individual structures built more than 50 years ago introduced too much cost, safety, and schedule uncertainty. The three operational organizations remain the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren AFB, the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB, and the 91st Missile Wing at Minot AFB.
As the Air Force chose new launch silos, launch centers, communications, and supporting infrastructure instead of refurbishing the existing structures, the first Minuteman III silo was removed from service in 2025. A prototype Sentinel silo broke ground at Promontory, Utah, on February 13, 2026, while utility-corridor prototyping at F.E. Warren is intended to support installation of thousands of miles of secure infrastructure. Every silo conversion must therefore be sequenced to retain sufficient Minuteman III capacity until replacement Sentinel facilities have been completed, tested, and certified.
The Sentinel also requires a new command and communications architecture. Hardened silos will connect to underground launch centers through modern hardened fiber-optic cables, two-officer crews will retain continuous alert duty, and the system must interface with the upgraded Nuclear Command, Control and Communications architecture. The missile uses a modular open-systems approach intended to accommodate hardware and software changes during service through roughly 2075, but system-level maturity remains uneven. The 2026 assessment found only four of 15 critical technologies mature, or 26.7%, leaving 11, or 73.3%, below the maturity threshold. This means the September stacking demonstrates the maturity of one comparatively advanced part of the Sentinel, while launch facilities, launch control systems, software, communications, and certification continue on separate schedules. Operational fielding will occur only when those schedules converge with missile flight qualification, rather than when the first LGM-35A ICBM successfully flies.
The financial scale further illustrates the difference between missile progress and overall program health. Sentinel triggered a critical Nunn-McCurdy breach in January 2024, after which its previous Milestone B approval and acquisition baselines were rescinded, and the program entered restructuring. Acquisition cost is now estimated at at least $141 billion, compared with the later pre-breach estimate of $95.3 billion, a $45.7 billion increase, or roughly 48%. The program has therefore been conducting missile, infrastructure, and test work while rebuilding the acquisition baseline, with a new development decision tied to the restructuring process. Cost uncertainty remains concentrated partly in infrastructure because final launch-facility and launch-control designs determine quantities of construction, equipment, labor and installation work across hundreds of geographically separated sites. The Pathfinder missile can consequently reach flight testing while substantial cost and schedule uncertainty remains elsewhere in the weapon system.
The remaining schedule problem is the duration of simultaneous Sentinel development and Minuteman III operation. The Sentinel initial capability has moved from the previous 2029 timeframe into the early 2030s, while the Minuteman III may require sustainment and testing for another two decades as the transition proceeds. As of July 2026, the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, and the Department of Energy were developing a post-2030 Minuteman III operational test-launch plan, while a 35-person Reserve missile-operator unit is planned for FY2027 to reduce transition manpower pressure. Pathfinder therefore resolves a narrowly defined but necessary problem: a complete three-stage Sentinel can now be transported, lifted, vertically integrated, interface-checked, and de-stacked using representative field procedures. The schedule that determines when Sentinel actually assumes the alert mission, however, is the intersection of 659 planned missile articles, 400 operational missiles, approximately 450 launch facilities, 45 launch control centers, more than 600 facilities, five states, thousands of infrastructure activities, NC3 integration, nuclear certification, and a Minuteman III force that may have to remain operational for another two decades to assume the alert mission.
