US B-2 bombers strike Iran’s major nuclear sites
The United States launched a major overnight airstrike targeting Iran’s three key nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. This marked a sharp escalation in the conflict that began with Israeli strikes on June 13, 2024.
US President Donald Trump called the strikes a “spectacular military success” and claimed Iran’s nuclear capacity had been “completely obliterated”.
The operation involved highly advanced weaponry and aircraft. The strike included Northrop Grumman B-2A Spirit bombers, known for their ability to evade radar detection, and six GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs), which are powerful bunker-buster bombs designed to penetrate hardened underground targets like Fordow. In addition, 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched, providing long-range precision targeting for other key facilities.
The deep underground Fordow site, which is located beneath a mountain near Qom, came under the most intense attack. US officials said it was “taken off the table,” though Iran says it was evacuated in advance and damage was limited.
However, at Natanz, Iran’s main uranium enrichment center, US and Israeli attacks have destroyed critical electrical infrastructure and may have damaged centrifuges, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). No radiation leakage beyond facility boundaries has been detected so far, according to both Iranian authorities and international monitors.
“[…] The IAEA has been informed by the Iranian regulatory authorities that there has been no increase in off-site radiation levels after the recent attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Fordow uranium enrichment site,” the IAEA statement reads.
The third location, Isfahan, which has been suspected of storing near-weapons-grade uranium, also sustained missile strikes.
