US reverts to ‘Airmen’ for NOTAM acronym, FAA adopts Gulf of America
The United States has reverted to using “Airmen” for the NOTAM acronym after former President Joe Biden changed the wording to “Air Missions” in 2021.
NOTAM, which previously stood for “Notice to Air Mission” was updated to ‘Notice to Airmen’ on February 10, 2025, by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“Effective immediately, the term Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) is being changed to Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), and the title of FAA Order 7930.2 is being changed to “Notice to Airmen (NOTAM),” the FAA wrote.
The FAA describes a NOTAM as a “notice containing information essential to personnel concerned with flight operations but not known far enough in advance to be publicized by other means”.
“Air Missions” was adopted by the FAA in 2021 under recommendations that the term should be more inclusive of all pilots.
Commenting on the change the new Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said: “In line with my commitment to restoring sanity to @USDOT, the FAA will resume using the term “Notice to Airmen” instead of “Notice to Air Missions.”
On February 10, 2025, the FAA also signaled that it was in the “process of updating our data and charts to show a name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America”.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order officially changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name on February 9, 2025, after announcing the move in January 2025.
The FAA issued a “Charting Notice” which also included a name change from Denali to Mount McKinley.
“This Charting Notice implements President Trump’s direction in Executive Order 14172, “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” that the names be changed,” said the FAA.
Google Maps also updated the new name on its platform and February 9, 2025, was proclaimed “Gulf of America Day”.
