USAF to train pilots at Italy’s International Flight Training School
The International Flight Training School (IFTS) in Decimomannu, Sardinia, will soon welcome its first group of US Air Force (USAF) student pilots under a landmark agreement between the Italian Air Force and the USAF.
The “Concept of Operations (CONOPS) for Flight Training of USAF Military Personnel in Italy” was signed on August 22, 2025, by Italian Air Force Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Antonio Conserva and Lieutenant General Brian S. Robinson, Commander of the USAF Air Education & Training Command.
This marks the first time in history that the USAF has chosen a school outside the United States, and within a NATO country, for initial pilot training.
Why IFTS was chosen
The program is built around the T-346A aircraft, which offers performance characteristics similar to those of the USAF’s upcoming T-7 trainer, making it an ideal platform for preparing pilots for next-generation fighter aircraft, such as the F-35, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Gripen.
The first 10 U.S. student pilots will start a nine-month training course based on the “Multiphase Jet Training Integrated Syllabus”, a curriculum jointly developed by the Italian Air Force and USAF. At the end of the program, students will earn their Military Pilot License on the T-346A.
Located within the Decimomannu Air Base and managed by the 212th Flight Group, part of the 61st Galatina Wing, the IFTS campus combines modern infrastructure and advanced simulation technology to support high-level pilot training.
Key facilities include:
A fleet of 22 T-346A aircraft
A dedicated Ground-Based Training System (GBTS), featuring full-mission simulators and part-task trainers
Housing and recreational facilities for students and staff, including a cafeteria, sports areas, and dedicated logistics support
The campus is operated in collaboration with Leonardo and CAE through their joint venture, Leonardo-CAE Advanced Jet Training. The post USAF to train pilots at Italy’s International Flight Training School appeared first on AeroTime.
