USS Tripoli commissioned into service while fire onboard USS Bonhomme Richard has been extinguished
Two good news for the amphibious forces of the U.S. Navy. First, USS Tripoli (LHA 7), the second America-class amphibious assault ship, has been commissioned into service.
Second, all fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) has been extinguished on Jul. 16.
Rear Adm. Philip E. Sobeck Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Three, says fire teams are investigating every space inside LHD 6 to verify that there are no more active fires.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 forced the Navy to forgo the traditional public commissioning ceremony of LHA 7. The warship will join Expeditionary Strike Group Three as well. The ship is currently at Pascagoula, Mississippi. It is also the last of its class that does not have a well deck for deploying amphibious vehicles.
