Vietjet receives first Boeing 737-8, marking the airline’s first non-Airbus jet
Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet has received its first Boeing 737-8 aircraft from an order of 200 Boeing jets worth US$32 billion, making it the airline’s first non-Airbus aircraft in its fleet.
The ceremony took place at Boeing’s facility in Seattle, Washington, and was attended by Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong, senior officials from both countries, and key business partners, the airline announced in a statement on September 21, 2025.
“The first Boeing aircraft received under this historic order is the result of nearly a decade of partnership between Boeing and Vietjet,” Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Vietjet said during the event. “It marks the start of hundreds more deliveries in the years ahead.”
The delivery aligns with the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.
Vietjet said that the delivery now serves as a “powerful symbol” of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which promotes trade, investment, and the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs in the US.
Additionally, the airline emphasized that it marks a “major milestone” in the growing partnership between Vietjet and Boeing.
“On behalf of the Boeing team, we are honored to join Vietjet in celebrating the airline’s first Boeing airplane,” said Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 737-8 will support the airline’s network growth, opening new routes to serve Southeast Asia and reinforcing the strength of one of the region’s most dynamic new-generation airlines.”
The first report about the completion of the initial delivery came from Reuters on September 16, 2025. However, there was a nine-year delay because of the worldwide grounding of the aircraft after two tragic crashes in October 2018 and March 2019.
