Vietnam Airlines secures $2.9B in financial backing for 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets
Vietnam Airlines has received a commitment from the Export-Import Bank of the United States covering financing tied to its planned acquisition of 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
The commitment, valued at more than $2.9 billion, supports the airline’s narrowbody fleet renewal program and marks another step toward bringing Boeing single-aisle aircraft into Vietnam Airlines’ fleet.
The aircraft are part of a 50-jet order finalized with Boeing earlier in 2026. Boeing said in February 2026 that the deal marked Vietnam Airlines’ first direct purchase of 737 MAX aircraft, giving the Vietnamese flag carrier a new narrowbody type for domestic and regional operations.
Vietnam Airlines is expected to receive the aircraft between 2030 and 2032. The 737 MAX 8 is designed for short- and medium-haul routes and is used by airlines for both high-frequency domestic flying and regional international services.
The aircraft will support a long-term fleet plan as the carrier prepares for continued growth in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-developing air travel markets.
The airline currently operates a widebody fleet that includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s, along with Airbus A321-family aircraft on shorter routes. The arrival of the 737 MAX would give the carrier another option in the narrowbody segment as it looks ahead to aircraft replacement, capacity growth, and network expansion.
Vietnam Airlines said the support would strengthen its ability to fund the aircraft investment and continue its fleet development strategy.
The 50-aircraft Boeing order is part of a broader wave of US aircraft commitments by Vietnamese carriers. In February 2026, Boeing announced agreements involving other Vietnamese operators, including Sun PhuQuoc Airways, as carriers in the country prepare for long-term growth in domestic, regional, and long-haul travel. The post Vietnam Airlines secures $2.9B in financial backing for 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets appeared first on AeroTime.
