Western Sydney Airport announces Vietjet flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) announced that Vietjet Air will begin flying to Ho Chi Minh City starting January 2027, marking the Vietnamese carrier’s entry into Sydney’s newest international gateway ahead of its passenger launch later this year.

WSI said Vietjet will operate two weekly services to Ho Chi Minh City beginning in January 2027, increasing to three weekly flights by March 2027. 

The airport also confirmed that Vietjet’s joint venture, Vietjet Thailand, plans to launch four weekly services between WSI and Bangkok starting November 2027, pending regulatory approval. 

Tickets for the January Ho Chi Minh City flights are now on sale, with one-way fares starting at AU$299 (US$212).

A new gateway for Western Sydney’s Vietnamese community

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said the route reflects strong demand between New South Wales and Vietnam, noting that more than half a million people traveled between the two in 2025 alone. 

He added that Western Sydney is home to more than 70,000 Vietnamese residents, over half of Greater Sydney’s Vietnamese population, many of whom travel regularly to visit family.

Hickey said the new toll-free M12 motorway will give these communities a direct link to the airport, where they’ll be able to fly to Ho Chi Minh City and connect onward to more than 40 domestic and international destinations. 

He noted that ticket sales launching on August 10, 2026, line up well with Lunar New Year travel in early February, as well as early booking offers for the new route.

Flight details

The Ho Chi Minh City service will begin Sunday, January 10, 2027, with two weekly flights operating every Sunday and Wednesday. 

Flights will arrive at WSI at 10:00 local time and depart for Ho Chi Minh City at 12:05 local time, flown on Vietjet’s Airbus A330 aircraft, which seat 377 passengers. 

A third weekly service will be added starting in March 2027. Specific flight times for the planned Bangkok route, set to launch in November 2027, have not yet been confirmed.

The Ho Chi Minh City flights are supported by the New South Wales government through the Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, an initiative designed to attract airlines to the airport and strengthen the state’s position in the competitive market for international air routes.

Federal and state support

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the new route marks Vietjet’s fifth Australian destination and reflects the growing momentum behind WSI ahead of its passenger opening. 

She noted that with passenger flights just 76 days away at the time of the announcement, testing and final preparations are underway at the terminal.

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said the state government is proud to support the new route through the Take-Off Fund, calling it an exciting time for local tourism, businesses, and jobs as the airport nears its opening.

Vietjet CEO Nguyen Thanh Son said the airline is pleased to become one of the first carriers operating at WSI, describing the move as part of its broader strategy to expand its international network while deepening ties between Vietnam and Australia. 

He said the new route is expected to support tourism, trade, investment, and people-to-people connections between the two countries, while giving passengers more affordable and convenient travel options.
